Title: Rear Shocks 'n' Springs Quote
Post by: Webby the Bear on 08 June 2012, 13:18:04
Hi guys, hope you're all well and looking forward to the weekend  :y

Just got a quote from Vx for the above.

Rear springs sold as a pair (not available on TC) - £315 exc. VAT  :o :o :o :o
Shocks sold individually (sold on TC) - £48.77 each, exc. VAT.

I would dearly love to know the following:

1. I politely declined the springs as I've seen them in Eurocarparts for £32.99 each. However, I don't know if they'd be any good. Anyone got a link to a decent pair :D at a reasonable cost?
2. Those shocks: good price? it means that with VAT they'll cost me £117.04 for the pair.

Cheers guys  :y

Go pattern for springs,  KYB, used them before, stuck Boge on 2.2 last time, again quite good. around £30/40 each.

Shocks, I'd go GM on TC prices  :)

For shock change, you need to get a 6mm spanner for top, also ratchet spanners are a god send on this job  :y

It's quite easy to break a 6mm spanner on this job. One of the few places to use a decent adjustable imo.

I found shock and springs a satisfying little job, it sounds major dropping diff (looks impressive too for next door) but its actually very straight forward. But you do need a big jack!

KYB or Boge rear springs, buy a pair.  Tradeclub shocks are fine. Some (like me) prefer B4s, they are slightly stiffer.

More than willing to help supervise, but apart from Sunday, I'm probably fully tied up until after the Lakes.

Pm replied.

Kyb Springs and GM shocks, IMO. I probably would not bother with b4 unless upgrading springs personally. But each to thier own. :)

Thanks guys for all your input. PM to ChrisG  :y

Got in the car to drive this morning and a terrib;e clattering noise coming from the passenger rear (was initially diagnosed with bad spring drivers' rear)

Rocked the car and could see the pass. rear shock is making a horrible noise.

This ok to drive? Will I be doing any damage until sorted?

Going to purchase springs 'n' shocks tomorrow.

Sweet thanks Tunnie, as long as I know.

Give me 5 mins I'll get a video  :y

Ps, I can't find these KYB springs specific for my car and Eurocarparts are out of stock. Are these any good....

Thanks mate, so i take it the rubber bush would come with the new shocks I was intending to put on anyway?

I'm not going to drive it until it has to be taken for the job to be done  :y

It comes with little bag which had replacement rubber bits, when removing old ones take care to note how the top bits go together. When refitting, put some grease on the replacement rubber parts, helps to stop them squeeking.

Before you remove the bottom bolt for shock, its worth now soaking it in Plusgas, WD40 will do. Wirebrush the end of the threads so you don't pull crap into the thread.

Think you got a big jack? use the top half of the handle on the big 1/2" drive, should make things a lot easier  :)

Thanks Tunnie,

I gave Vx the reg. number and they said I have ''standard'' shocks as opposed to the self levelling

Is there any way of double checking they are ''standard'' as I wouldnt want to buy them and realise they're the wrong ones  :y

If you can see a large sensor (looks like HID sensor) in the back middle part of the car you have self leveling suspension

BTW I don't think CD cars ever came with self leveling.
Only elites.
Also when I changed the rear shocks I put KYB (here they were around 70 pounds for a pair).
I still think B4 are better but these KYB are very good.
Also Sachs springs should be fine, they are OEM manufacturers for suspension parts

CD spec won't have SL, does not have the SL pump fitted. Only Elites came with those shocks  :)

I replaced the self leveling dampers on my car last year because they were making graunching noises. Turned out that they had rusted through from the outside and lost most of the fluid.

I don't think standard dampers fail in the same way though (not having a big rubber condom on the outside to hold the mud and road salt in contact with the outer tube ::))

Don't use ordinary grease on the rubber bushes (most bushes will react badly to petroleum products). Silicone grease is probably OK though...... :-\

Rears are not sided, unlike fronts.
