I was watching the England game last week at a family get together in Essex.  A younger cousin asked which was the best ever England team, us older ( and probably not much wiser!) cousins went ' Er.. 1966 ' Young cuzzie looked confused, dazed and shocked!!!  :o ::) ;D

I wasn't born in 1966, so that really must be in the mists of time to my 11 year old cousin!!!  ;D ;D ;D

Apparently Mr Rooney is on £200,000 a week, so he must be good.  ;D ;D ;D ;D. It's a crazy world where a footballer with a single figure I.Q earns as much in a weekend as a teacher earns in five years. :-\

Assuming average wage is £20,000 (and many earn much less than this) it takes the average man or woman in the street TEN YEARS to make what this thick bastard earns in ninety minutes. Can't be right, can it?

I try to limit my watching of lady boys running around a field to as little as possible, thus I don't watch any domestic stuff. Based on my watching of England, is a lazy fat little git who trots up & down after the ball never really doing anything.

Over-rated, over paid.

Danny Welbeck did a much better job in his time on pitch compared to Rooney

Thing is, he is a very very good player. but like the whole of our national team they can't put that talent on to the international stage.

because we're limited to the amount of friendlies and international touraments we play, the team has to be picked on club form..and as his goal scoring record this season shows he has had a good season

I think you can guess my point of view  ;)

Rooney has had his chance at international level, time for others to try. I hope some of the less well known players get a chance, win and keep side as is.

I agree footballers are overpaid, but do remember they do not get paid to play for England. And also teachers are well overpaid for what they do. I personally know a teacher, socially that is. She is 28 or 29 and earns £45K a year. This is in a normal state school in Dorset. She does a few extras like the Duke of Edinburghs award thing and she works with the kids with learning difficulties. But that has advantages of beng small classes.

We could also try a bit of supporting a national team rather than just knocking them all the time.  :y

Earning power is all about supply and demand, it has absolutely nothing to do with social worth. How do you define social worth anyway, it is like "fairness" another meaningless piece of political talk. What 'social worth' or 'fairness' is, is what you define it to be. I could make a case for a tramp, cleaner, cook, lorry driver, banker, politician, engineer, scientist, doctor, nurse, teacher, footballer etc all having the highest social worth.

In all entertainment industries the most talented, hard working, generally make it to the top and are very well rewarded. Good luck to them for using their hard work and talent and earning all they can. In the same position most of us would be doing the same. I know I would.

I much prefer this to the parasites on welfare as a lifestyle choice.

The $100bn industry of top football which is the Premeirship, La Liga, Serie A and the Bundesliga have about 4000 players, who are arguably the best in the world. So, a whole industry is based on a very small number of people. This applies to many entertainment industries (films, games, music, sport to name but a few), which rely on small number of highly talented people.

People will spend disproportionate amounts of money on their hobbies as it is entertainment and enjoyment.

In my opinion it is the low paid  who contribute most  toward society. For example, if overnight all doctors, nurses, and teachers disappeared from the face of the Earth we would all be in deep shit. However, should the whole of the premier league be abducted by aliens  and taken to a far away planet where people had to work for a living, good old mother earth would still rotate as though nothing significant had happened. :)

It is difficult for society to function effectively without the cooks, cleaners and carers that make up society........but take away "old Brucie" and the world doesn't give a f**k. :)

As for bankers, I can't think of a group of individuals who contribute less to the well-being of society. :)
