Post by: Taxi_Driver on 12 June 2012, 19:24:58
with vehicles .....

Got rid of my Skudo and took delivery of a '60' plate long wheelbase Renault Trafic on monday morning.

This afternoon and about 200 miles since ive had it......the beeping clutch goes  :( clutch pedal sunk to the floor and stays there.

Get rescued to the garage.......be fixed by wed afternoon.....new clutch and slave cylinder (i think) they said it needed  :(

Still..... its a day off for me tomorrow  :D ;D

Anything with tits or wheels is always unreliable and expensive. ::)

Especially if it is French. ::)

Sorry to hear about your problem, I hope you are soon back on the road, the cost is not too painful and this is all that goes wrong with it.

Don't mention the gearbox.  ;) :P :-X

Gearbox problems are also common as my next door neighbour's son has found out to his cost, where he has lost first gear.

They have a reputation for eating gearboxes form 60k miles onwards. The gearbox, MUST not be filled to the filler plug as this overfills them, stops a flicker mechanism throwing oil round the box and so destroying it. Apparently their is a drain plug near the bell housing for draining the oil and special Total / Elf oil GL4+ should be used. Changing the oil annually is meant to extend the life of the gearbox.

This posting is probably good advice from the Renault Forum on a Trafic gearbox problem:

"Sorry to here about your probs with the gearbox in you van,
You must use 75/80 to service spec GL4+ NOT GL5.
Oil meeting Gl5 standard is a different spec product and is not 'backwards compatible' with GL4+. GL5 gear oil is a lubricantwith very high extreme pressure performance needed for hypoid gears where sliding and rolling contacts operate under very high loadings. This frequently achieved by incorporating a high concentration of sulphur type additives.
The downside to such a high sulphur content is it tends to corrode yellow metals, so can ruin parts like brass synchronisers and some bushings. so any assembly needing GL5 performance is designed taking this limitation of the oil into account.
GL4 oils are far less aggressive to yellow metals, and so are used in assemblies where such high-load sliding- rolling contacts aren't present.

I have owned my van from new (95k now) having heard about the probs with pk6 box I have changed the oil every year.
The pk6 in a trafic needs 2.6litres of oil not 2.2 or 2.4 or 2.5, IT NEEDS 2.6.
I found this out by phoning about 6 or 7 dealers only to be told a different amout by each, so I drained the box into a clean tub and measured it with a kitchen jug hey presto 2.6l from new so I have replaced it with 2.6l every time and have had no probs yet.
I now use total bv transmision because it says GL4+ on the can and is about a quarter of the price.
Total and elf are the same company so elf GL4+ is the same as total GL4+, just phone them and ask."

The gearbox drain plug is here:

"I forgot to mention there is a drain plug at the bottom of the diff area this empties it.
If you over fill it the oil throwers on the shafts become submerged and will not flirt oil up in the box."

Hmmm Rods, I wonder if renault dealers are as good as vauxhall dealers at ignoring all that technical stuff when they do a service.
