I am well aware of the scuttle probs..but not talking about that
ok all here we go
suck.squeeze.bang.push.
[1]piston makes its way down the bore and the inlet valves are open and the fuel is coming in...
[2]piston gets to the bottom of its stroke and at some point valves shut and piston starts its compression
stroke with all valves shut.
[3]piston then gets near to tdc and BANG .spark. and the piston is forced down.
[4]piston makes its way back up outlet valves open and dumps the burnt gases.
i have a 4 pot engine and have water in the number 4 plug hole...how can it be related to a head gasket fail
the only way i can see is on the compression stroke..for water to get in there it must be forced in there
to sum it up i cannot see how a H/G faliure can put water in the hole...
i may be missing something here and gonna end up looking like a turkey...well wont be the first time.
i have thought about when engine is cooling and metal is shrinking...now water can leak into cylinders...not
plug holes[25 NM] gases dont get past but water can...wont have that
but it starts first time...never had a lock up ie[trying to conpress water]
no misfire,,,,,,,,,,,,,,its the scuttle;;;

Water in the CYLINDER would not only indicate a HG failure, it would cause a hydraulic lock on the compression stroke as water is uncompressable ... so to follow your logic would require several faults ..
Headgasket failure that leaks only water, and only into that cylinder, and a failure of the plug seal exactly sufficient to allow the correct amount of water to seep out and prevent the hydraulic lock ....
Now that is a coincidence too far for me... given what you describe I would not be talking HG failure in any way .. but an external source of water ingress to the plug wells ... either rain or a coolant leak .. :)

1) Are you actually using/loosing coolant?
2) As Albs said, water in pot4 usually indicates leaking scuttle.

cos when i threw kettles of water at screen ..scuttle did not leak..water just came out the drain holes at side of car
so i started thinking h/g but as all seem to say scuttle...i will get the thing to leak ;D ;D ;D ;D

Advised the OP via PM that it`s probably water ingress via the scuttle. As OP is not experiencing any starting problems unlikely to be HG related but HG on a 4-pot near #4 cylinder due to proximity of coolant channel as arrowed in pic is the weakest point and a common area for failure. HG has been known to leak sufficiently to cause lumpy initial start up but not enough to cause hydrolock. Been there done it

Have you checked the foam underneath the scuttle is dry?

no tunnie but will do :y as rob says i have no starting prob at all so its got to be the scuttle has it seems a common prob..and thinking about it i have had coil pack in and out a lot lately doing diff jobs no water..then last time i took it out water in 4 ..and the night b4 lots of rain

now its stopped raining just been ouy there to check the sponge and it was soaked yeppy..so its a tube of silicon i need :y :y :y :y

Did you poor the water on the screen or in the scuttle itself. If in the scuttle, a leaking windscreen seal wouldn't show the leak. :-\

When I had our last 4 pot the HG went between cylinders 3 and 4, common apparently...but was obvious with the plume of white exhaust (Steam) and semi hydro lock, just got it to the garage..... ::) ::) ::)

It's quite possible that a "smallish" leak will not manifest itself when a bucket of water is thrown at it .. but constant rain over several hours will let a considerable amount through ???
