Title: Maybe I am tight, went out for a meal tonight
Post by: Vamps on 19 June 2012, 23:52:11
We had arranged to meet this evening for our swmbo / fathers day meal out as other things got in the way on Sunday. Swmbo and Miss Vamps and I met after work to go to a Chinese eat what you can buffet type of place, somewhere we have been many times before, Miss Vamps likes the seaweed... ::) ::)

It was closed.... ::) ::)

So Plan B, a pub near to where we live, next village, lovely food but bill was near on £45.00  for 3 of us including 3 soft drinks:o :o :o

You are in the South and I would expect that,  we just wanted ordinary food and chose the wrong pub, in Ripon, North Yorkshire, we can to go Wetherspoons and get fed, with bigger and better including similar drinks for half that, though we could also pay more..... ::) ::)

How many people can afford to eat out at that price on a regular basis? not us.. ::) ::)

Went to a pub near us (The Quays, next door to Billing Aquadrome where the Vx fest is held) for Fathers' Day (well, actually ate on the Saturday but that was his present!  ;D) and for 4 of us it came to £28 exc. drinks. I was pleasantly surprised.

I like liver, but as SWMBO doesn't, we don't get it at home. It has to be cooked right though ....... very easily ruined too.

The nearest two places to me. One is carvery and is 3.99 head except Sunday when I think it 4.99. Second place is restaurant and it cost us £89.00 for 5 of us inc drinks 2 pints stronbow one pint fosters one pint cola one orange juice and one tap water.  :o Doubt I be going back for awhile.

And no I can't afford that on a regular basis thats for sure.

I think £15 per plate for good food in an independent pub is about right, or £25 in a good restaurant plus drinks. Mind you it is classed as a treat for us, say once a month :y :y
Personally I wouldn't entertain eating in a chain owned place like Harvester, Weatherspoons ,Toby Carvery etc. :( :(

it certainly is a lot more expensive down here seeing all your replies...but cleggy why not weatherspoons etc never ate in any you mention although this time last year i spent most if my time in premier inn(due too work) and due to that was forced to eat 90 % of the time at a table table...which did seem good value... :y

Almost worth driving North just to eat out at those prices.

Half decent restaraunt meal around here is £20 + a head excl drinks.Average pub grub is £10-£15 each again less drinks. :(

Ripon is a nice place, but far from a cheap area (well, back when I was up there, anyway).. ah, memories. I do miss North Yorkshire.

Still.. I took a lady out for a meal the other week and the total came to £99.95 when all was said and done; two starters (fresh Sicilian olives to share and baked Camembert to share), two mains (8oz steak on a potato rosti with red wine jus), two desserts (mango sorbet and raspberry creme bruleé) and drinks (three rum & cokes and three cokes).

But it was spectacular food as it always is there..

we normally go to a eat what you like chinese now great value at about £13 each drinks can be excessive at times ::) foods great but thats the problem

the meals normally mean the once in a blue moon shaggy time wifeys all dressed up ive put some fresh pants on so the moods set for some lurve after the meal but the food and you can order what you want and have it again and again and again closet thing i get to a muff is 3 bowls of seaweed with some hot and sour soup plus wifey zooms in on the desserts so we both go home totally stuffed spraweld out on the sofas wishing we had not eaten so much doggys normally got the right raving hump as he can smell the food and knows hes missed out

Nothing wrong with the places, but they are all the same, it's just that when I eat out I want something different cooked by a chef with seasonal local produce and a changing menu. A few near us put up a chalk board of the days choices freshly cooked and as they run out are removed from the menu, and replaced with something different. :y

I often wonder what happened to proper pub grub, Cottage Pie, chips & beans, Pie and mash, Ham, Eggs & Chips, Pie & Mushy peas, when food was only served at lunchtimes and cheap. Good honest grub with a couple of pints in the local they are all mini restaurants now and lets kids in, even women ;) ;D ;D ;D

Yeah, it's a shame. I could probably name at least a dozen pubs within a couple of miles of me where you could get a really top-notch meal and a decent pint, but, for the pair of us, you'd struggle to keep the bill south of £50 and end up totally stuffed.

Those who do "simpler" food dish up the usual brake brothers cr@p which is no better than a TV dinner from the supermarket at triple the price.

What with beer edging towards £4 a pint I can't see much of a future for pubs, TBH.

Eh? "Fresh olives " are ghastly. You have to soak them in brine and change the water a few times before they are palatable. The commercial process believe it or not uses caustic soda
