Title: MV6 3.2 rattle
Post by: Halflife79 on 26 June 2012, 18:13:20
Hi all,I've just done an oil change using Magnatex 10/40 and have now got a rattle,it seems to be more apparent when it's warmed up and from the bottom of the engine but it dosnt sound like a small or big end knock its deffinetly more of a rattle and goes away when the engine is revved from idle.
I'm going to do another oil change with vauxhall oil to see if it makes a difference but any info would be gratefully recieved, thanks

very similar to mine, when hot, tapping/ticking at idle only, any amount of revs sounds fine. Its either low pressure or sticky tappet or number of tappets. (in my case it looks like a drop in oil pressure at hot idle, cold it sounds sweet)

Try GM oil as Castrol is shite, I'm tempted to try some thicker oil next change myself.

If you do stick thicker oil in, I'd be very interested to hear the results  :y

So even tho the noise is more apparent from the bottom of the engine it still points to a tappet or tappets and to the brand of oil used?
It definetly wasn't making this noise before the oil change

Might be worth whipping the sump off to make sure the oil pick up is free from crud ;)

If it was big end, you would really hear it. Start with fresh lot of GM oil and go from there, you could always drop the sump and check the pickup feed  :y

Yeah I've had big ends and small ends go on others cars mainly rs turbos back in my younger days and they knock rather than rattle and you get a regular knock and mine dosnt do that,I'll give it a oil change and check the pick up out, other thing is its only done 65000 and has good service history if that counts for anything on these engines more than others I don't know?

If its Vauxhall full service history, thats actually a negative  ::)

DIY service and these engines are good for 200k+  :y

Is it worth running the engine with aux belt off briefly? Just in case one if the auxilarys is acting up? Might not have noticed before the oil change?

Gm oils are way cheaper than castrol, ESP on tc.

Presume it's 10/40 on the correct level?

Did you use any additives to help clean out the old engine oil before you changed it?

I'd be dropping the Castrol shite out, putting in a better oil, and seeing what happens. Esp as this happened immediately after putting the Castrol Shite in.

My thoughts on Castrol oils are well known. Basically, I wouldn't even let it ruin my lawnmower.

As long as the oil hasn't been changed every 20k, like the schedule suggests, history is always good.

How often has it been changed?

Its been changed every 10k but you said "as long as it has't been changed every 20k" did you mean "has" :)

Also whats the general opinion on halfords oil and Mobils oils?

The GM schedule is every 20k. Which is ridiculous, but pleases fleet managers.

I'd say 10k is too long.

I try to change mine every 3k ;) - the single best thing you can do :y

Given the cost of GM Semi Synth on Trade Club, no other oil is worth considering.  Its as cheap as the cheap stuff, and a very good oil. About £45 for 4 x 5l cans.

Mobil1 is another very good oil, but too expensive. I'd prefer to use a cheaper (but still good quality) oil, and change it more regularly, than an expensive oil, changed every 10k ;)
