As some of you on here know, my youngest son Tim started his training for the RAF Regiment last year at RAF Honnington.
I'm so proud to say that he's successfully graduated with flying colours and has his passing out parade on Friday. :y :y :y Going up there with his mum, brother, girlfriend and one of his mates Friday and it's going to be a very emotional day (note to self - take extra large box of Kleenex). His girlfriend has arranged a surprise celebration party for Friday evening so all his mates and family will be there when he arrives with us so I imagine there's going to be a few sore heads come Saturday morning! ::) ;D
He'll have a couple of weeks leave following this so he's off to Majorca with his girlfriend for a week for a well deserved rest (that's what he tells me anyway! ;D). He'll have a few months specialist weapons training when he goes back and then the bad news.........he off to Helmand Province in Afghanistan for his first tour of duty next April. :(
I'm feeling like the proudest father in the world at the moment! :y :y :y

Unfortunately the Rock Apes (Regiment) aren't airmen though Tunnie ;)
Bob, as I'm sure Guffers will tell you, Helmand doesn't always mean bad news. I've got lots of serving friends who say there are worse postings ;)

That's correct. :y The Regiment's main task is to protect RAF interests such as their airfields. In Helmand they're not likely to adventure much further than the airbase's perimeter, so not likely to face danger on a daily basis like our unfortunate squaddies that have to patrol the streets. Still not a pleasant place to be though.

Tell him to take his bucket and spade and plenty of sun cream ;) ;D
As you well know Bob, I jest. Just because he should be relatively "safe" doesn't mean he's not doing an important job ;) And I'm sure he'll do it well :y

He will from time to time but mostly in choppers transferring from one location to another. Interestingly, in their final phase of training (before graduation) took place in Wales a couple of weeks ago and they were on an exercise that involved being moved around the valleys in open doored Merlin choppers at very low altitude - he reckoned it was a better buzz than any rollercoaster in the world!!

Brilliant news bob. its a great feeling when they achieve something so good. your shed a tear at his parade i bet :y. my boy has gone off the raf now and has the opportunity for apprenticeship at British airways aircraft engineer but just got gcse grade A in accounting and finance at school so thinking of btec accounting now.
-
well done that man ,makes you proud,in this presant climate its good to see some one getting on he will have plenty of chances to get on good luck to him ,
best regards matt

I think most children's achievements has a lot to do with good parenting and commitment. well done to his mum ;)
-
Even though he's wearing the wrong colour (sorry just had to get that in) you have every reason to be proud, as does he. I know how hard training at that standard is and the flying around in choppers at low altitude is awesome.
We can chat about the other stuff if you like in person at some point, cant do it on here but it isn't anything like what you see in the media. He may well spend most of his time on Op bronze and Op Massive (he will tell you what they are ;D)
Enjoy the parade :y

Well done indeed. I'm with you on the pride bit, our son passed out in 2008. Has done two tours in Afghan and did suffer the consequences of an IED - all ok now though.
He will be allowed to make x minutes of free phone calls a month - just be sure that he calls you just to say hello - even if the majority of the calls are to his GF. :y
-
I know how you feel bob..my boy has just gone back to pirbright and is halfway through phase one training...passing out is scheduled for end of august..

These evil IED's are a real worry for our forces out there. So sorry to hear your son was the victim of one but glad to hear he's ok now :y - not many of our guys are after coming into contact with them >:(
Since he's been at RAF Honnington most of the calls he makes are to his GF! ::) Still, manage to have a chat with him now and again and he's been getting home for the odd weekend.
