I used to like him. What a muppet. ::) :(
-
I will invite him to drive in our roads.. 40 celcius and a 800 mile trip at 55 mph.. this will be "educative" ;D

Cem. In England people drive on your bumper at 80 mph (130km) but with a bit of space the roads are quite safe for 80 mph. The country roads are the ones that aren't as safe. In Spain they are reducing the speed limit from 100km to 90 km (62 to 56mph) on minor roads. Sadly I think they are right. That is where the accidents happen not motorways. Unfortunately when you have a serious accident on a motorway it slows or diverts traffic for ages making people think motorways are more dangerous roads.
I think Damon never needs to get from A to B (on a road). I dare say he uses a helicopter. He is wrong.

on our motorways speed limit is 120 kms/hr for minimum 3 lanes (mostly 4 lanes)
2 lane roads 100 km/hr + 10km
single lanes max 100 km (mostly 90 ) unless stated otherwise..
and during my trip to İstanbul and back to Ankara rare cars obey the speed limit.. my avg (to Ankara) for 450km was around 150 kms/hr ;D
(except tunnels.. this is serious if you speed in Bolu tunnel (very long and limit is 70km/hr ) they stop you immediately as its covered with speed cameras)

The vast majority of drivers shouldn't be driving at all. So he has a very valid point.
-
Personally, I would return the motorways to their pre 1965 limit. :y :y

Assuming you're not a complete tit, speed is rarely a problem. Speed differential is. And with so many 'tards driving so bloody slow, and being encouraged to by do-gooders with no proper job, its only going to get worse.
-
Daemon hill only wants this speed limit down to 55mph so that he can go past every one on his zimmer frame...lets face it ..it is a long time since he won anything and i dont think he will win this one if common sense prevails :y

speed does not cause accidents....bad driving causes accidents
-
I remember, as a driver, when we had a 55mph National limit, late 70's I think? to save fuel.... I wonder if there are any statistics to prove less accidents, I doubt it, and I know there are a lot more cars on the road now. Speed does not Kill, it is the wrong speed, perhaps in the wrong hands, to suit the situation that Kills; Our cars are so much more able than when the 70 speed limit came in, just not so sure that many drivers are..... :( :( :(

I was about to say that - he has a point; most people can't drive for toffee, unfortunately, and aren't safe above walking pace!

Maybe the standard of driving in Essex is far superior. But as you say, round these parts, the general standard I'd shockingly bad.
To all...
when was the last time you had an incident free journey? No near misses, no idiots going wrong way round roundabouts, u turning on a dual carriageway, got cut up, or generally had to take avoiding action?
I suspect the number of incidents will decrease the more rural the location. But the m4 corridor, your lucky if you can physically do 55 at times. Much less 80.

Apart from outside lane hoggers, my journey in to work this morning was trouble free. The journey home, no 'bad driving' noticed ;)
-
In England in 2011, there were 30 road deaths per 1 million inhabitants, a figure surpassed in Europe only by Sweden (28) and Iceland (25).
On a wider scale, our figure was less than the US (106) and Australia (60) and Japan (45).
Don't think we have a big enough problem to gum up the roads with everyone crawling at 55mph– not counting the cost to the economy with deliveries taking longer.
