Title: Weather forecasting in Aus
Post by: CaptainZok on 28 October 2006, 23:16:02
It was April and the Aboriginals in a remote part of Northern
Australia asked their new elder if the coming winter was going to
 be cold or mild.

Since he was an elder in a modern community he had never been
taught the old secrets. When he looked at the sky he couldn't
tell what the winter was going to be like.

Nevertheless, to be on the safe side, he told his tribe that the
winter was indeed going to be cold and that the members of the
tribe should collect firewood to be prepared.

But being a practical leader, after several days he had an idea.
He walked out to the telephone booth on the highway, called the
Bureau of Meteorology and asked, "Is the coming winter in this
 area going to be cold?"

The meteorologist responded, "It looks like this winter is going
 to be quite cold."

So the elder went back to his people and told them to collect
even more wood in order to be prepared.

A week later, he called the Bureau of Meteorology again. "Does it
still look like it is going to be a very cold winter?"

The meteorologist again replied, "Yes, it's going to be a very
 cold winter."

The elder again went back to his community and ordered them to
collect every scrap of firewood they could find.

Two weeks later the elder called the Bureau again. "Are you
absolutely sure that the winter is going to be very cold?" he asked.

"Absolutely," the man replied. "It's looking more and more like
it is going to be one of the coldest winters ever."

"How can you be so sure?" the elder asked.

"The weatherman replied, "There are reports that the Abo's
are collecting firewood like crazy, and that's always a sure sign."

Tomorrow it will be mostly rain and wind in Scotland. England will see the best of the weather with a few scattered showers. In Wales there will be a few leaks from the sky and Ireland will see the real weather that the Uk will get over the coming days.

50k Anyone?  ;D ;D

Whilst in the Brecon Beacons last month, I was on my way up a mountain with a group of kids and phoned up for a weather report. This is what it said.

"Blah blah blah ..... This afternoons scattered showers may not be so scattered and will possibly join together to create long periods of rain, however if this is not the case there may be sunny spells"

WHAT GOOD IS THAT TO ANYONE???

YOUR BETTER OFF JUST TRUSTING YOUR OWN MOUNTAIN SKILLS, RATHER THAN PHONING UP, PEOPLE BECOME TOO RELIANT ON THOSE SERVICES, SAT NAV ETC ETC..  :y

Strangely I have always studied synoptic charts and made my own forecasts but was being lazy and thought I would phone up. Don't worry, I am back to using experience, gut feeling and being prepared for all weather conditions from now on.

Like it. Now all you have to do is train your dog to forecast the weather for you.

If my dog doesn't scratch at my door by 07.30am I know it is raining and he doesn't want to go out.
