How does this app Viber work? I do have it and it does work to other Viber users just puzzled how they can do it for free when every other company you have to obviously pay....

Yes, but unless you hammer the nuts out of it, the amounts of data won't be vast.

For calls, it makes them over the internet. It would not route through the mobile operators as a call, but as data, just as if you were browsing OOF. Their app sends it between users who have the same app, as long as you have an unlimited or capped data bundle its free for you to use. But if you don't have a data bolt on, it would start to add up.
Same with texts, just like instant message (MSN/Yahoo) its going over the internet, so its free.
Where they make money is adverts, logging numbers and data and selling it on :y
