Looks like a Megane to me, all rse ;)

the avantyne (or whatever the shite heap is called) was the car they mod'd on top gear. im thinking its rareity has a direct corelation to the number of sales cos of it's disgusting looks.
only plus for getting one would be the size. they look absolutely massive inside.

Not at all, the doors are double hinged so you can open the door in tiny gaps and still get in with no problem :y. The Vel Satis is an ugly car, but they're very comfortable.

The Ami 6 was quite cool, though. Ami 8 was just horrible.
They were slow too. Very, very, very slow.

The Insignia is an ugly mare too.
Bloated and ungainly it is devoid of style. It has dated poorly. :-\
It appeared old-fashioned before production even started. :(

That goes for 99% of "current" car models IMHO.
They plug the same numbers into the same aerodynamic modelling software, apply the same type approval criteria for impact protection, etc. and get the same bland car out as a result.

Yes, I think Claire (Guinney1971) runs an Avantime - amongst a few others. I'm sure she could give a run down on either it or the Vel Satis.

no mention of ugly cars is complete without the mention of the Fiat Multipla....
or, more commonly known as
The Fuglymobile.
:D
a mate has one..... it's unremittingly eye waveringly ugly, and shite as well....
how much fiat paid to have it named car of the year, way back then, i have no idea....
Billions probably....

.. or what about that ghastly Nissan Juke?
The Japanese haven't got any better at translating their product names into Engrish. Surely they meant Nissan Joke? ;D
-
Jensen CV8......ugly as sin, but I want one. :y

Fair enough.. although <dreaming> it I were hypothetically offered the keys to a 541 as an alternative <wakes up> :-*

Pal of mine was a senior manager @ Renault's UK head office @ the time these were introduced. So, I've driven them both as he used to bring them home & tried many times to get me to buy one - oh no no no no....
The Avantine did indeed have double hinged doors and was easy enough to get in and out of.
They drove little more than "ok", which at the time wasn't that good considering that they were brand new and that I was comparing them with my R reg MV6, which @ the time would have been 6 years old and with 100k on it.
The interesting (strange) thing is that with the Vel Satis there was an extensive choice of wooden inlays for the dash area, these were all real wood and very nicely implemented IIRC.
Strange things French cars ::)

French -- enough said YUK YUK YUK Never. :-[ :-[ :y :y

Indeed LR, in a world of dreadful sameness some things remain iconic - bearing that in mind, should I ever hope to be seduced by anything French – other than Ségolène Royal or Christine Lagarde – it would have to be by an early 60’s Chapron DS Décapotable. :-* :-* 8)

It's not ugly, just a bit odd looking. Can't argue with the shite part though. Both of my neighbours have them, so there are two parked outside now.
Now if you want to see an ugly car, google for pics of a Ssangyong Rodius. I should warn you that you will regret it! This is why I'm not providing a link. You may have seen one on the road, but a normal brain should mask the effect of its ghastlyness
As for the Avantime, only the French could come up with a massive 4 seat 'coupe' based on a bloody great people carrier(it's a 3.0l V6 Espace underneath). I quite like it, it's a proper French car focused on style(which is an objective thing) and comfort. At least it's not pretending to be a French attempt at a German car. Can you imagine what a mess they'd make of that?
As for the running costs, if you pay Renault to fix it, you'll be bankrupt very quickly. For instance, they want nearly £1400 to change the cambelt(when the kit is £120ish) as they insist on taking the engine out to do the job! My mate who's run one as his daily for the last 3 years did it in 4 hours on his drive. His was converted to LPG before he bought it, and he spends less on fuel than I do. They can suffer from crap electrics, but then what modern car doesn't? As for the rest of the mechanical bits, it's all common Renault, just like an Omega is easy Vauxhall parts.
