Title: God Save The Queen
Post by: Turk on 27 July 2012, 23:02:55
Does England not have it's own national anthem, and God Save The Queen is actually the British national anthem ?  :-\

Somewhere in the lyric theres an anti scottish notion??

What can you say about the Welsh. It rains constantly which enough to put anyone in a mood.

That verse usually gets left out. ;)
Imo its hypocritical and extremely churlish to refuse to sing the British national anthem and yet compete for Britain in the British Olympics. It should be mandatory, and if they refuse, fack them off out of it and replace them with people with a bit of patriotism.

Have I missed something? I seem to remember then singing an English, Welsh, Scottish and Northern Ireland anthem and the National Anthem when the Queen descended.... :D :D

Pretty sure the OP was referring to the antics when the GB football team played a couple of days ago. ;)
Also not sure exactly where Norn Irn stands at these games tbh.I read something about an athlete from Norn Irn competeing in the all Ireland squad, and its not called team UK but team GB - confusing. :-\

Edit. According to the BBC and Wiki websites, competitors from Norn Irn will take part as part of the GB team, which begs the question, why isnt it named team U.K and Im still mystified as to why the torch went to Dublin.Dont recall the U.S sending the torch to Mexico. ::)

Much as it pains me to make any comment on anything to do with these proceedings but I’m obliged to say that if these people were playing for the national team, then they should have paid due respect to the anthem of this country.

What a pitiful show of small mindedness.

Insofar as an Anthem for England is concerned, in my view there can only be one.

England and Northern Ireland have 'God Save The Queen', Scotland has 'Flower of Scotland' and Wales has 'Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau'. (Land of my Fathers).  :y

England has traditionally but unofficially "Jerusalem" as its anthem (and also it could be argued Land of hope and glory). Flower of Scotland and Land of my Fathers are in the same bracket, traditional anthems but not officialy recognised national anthems.

I've heard 'Flower of Scotland' and 'Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau' at international events but I've never heard
'Jerusalem' or 'Land of hope and glory'.  ('Jerusalem' would be my suggestion.)

I thought the show was teriffic, full marks to Danny Boyle and all responsible, and I speak as one who was well prepared to rubbish it! :y

 :y Yep, me too.

Ever since I saw the interview where the scale model was unveiled. I thought Sheep ? ... Cows ? ... Country side theme ?...Oh dear !!

But no, he absolutely nailed it !!

It would have been good to be there, but much of it worked best on screen. Tens of thousands in the stadium, but a billion viewing on screens around the world...and they were very much taken into consideration.

Too many to choose one favourite section, but if pressed I'd go with Queen Elizabeth's entry with Bond.  :y :y

" and with a mighty rush
Rebellious scots to crush"

And obviously my reaction is.... >:( >:( >:(

It is true that Scotland has no 'official' national anthem, however it is usually Flower of Scotland or Scotland the brave played at sporting events

I thought Queenie looked abit hacked off last night!!  :-\  I know she's getting on in years, has had a very busy summer and it was a very long night for an elderly lady, but I think she could have made the effort to smile briefly...  ::)

Maybe it's time to delegate stuff like this to Charlie....  ???

Well that's off to The Tower for me!!!  ::) God Save The Queen!!!  :y :y :y
