Title: National Anthem
Post by: SteveAvfc. on 28 July 2012, 12:22:15
As this is the Olympics where do you stand on ALL those who are taking part  having to sing the national anthem. For example GB Football team should Ryan Giggs sing, after all he is Welsh, but he is also the captain.  :-\ :-\

I always thought that the national anthem was for Great Britain and not just England

This is all indicative of our nations lack of pride in itself. We are always ready to knock our own efforts.

Team GB, national anthem. Simple. Those that can't sing perhaps are either deaf or cannot remember the words.

Not many other countries are as un nationalistic as Britain. :'(

Sad but true  :(

We spend far to much time being worried what everybody else thinks of us and apoligiseing for something that we, as a nation did hundreds of years ago  :(
Tbh, its about time we as a nation "grew a pair" and live our lifes "as we want" while sticking 2 fingers up to the appeasers who role over everytime some muppet from another country pulls a face at us

That is the nub of the matter, in my opinion.

At the Olympics 'we' are Great Britain - not any of the component countries - and as such, the National Anthem is GSTQ.

That some folks view Team GB as the English team, that is also part of the matter.

That some folks see anyone other than English in Team GB as a problem, is also part of the matter.

That some folks view the Union flag as the English flag, is also part of the matter.

That folks in other countries view GB/UK as England, is also part of the matter.

Number of other examples but it would make even more tedious reading!   :) :) :)

Tbh, I think alot of the above is down to the media  :(

For instance, Andy Murrey.
A proud Scot.

When he wins, the media darlings "big him up" as British.
But when he gets beat, you can bet your life that he will be refared too as Scotish  :(

Its a shame that we as nations have let this happen.
Me personaly, class myself as English above all else but would never turn my nose up if somebody like the yanks called me a Brit  :)

During the days of the empire, we all had a certain pride and identity but nowdays that has gone to be replaced with insecurity  :(

At the Rugby World Cup (I won't say the football World Cup, coz Wales never get far enough ::)),  or any international event where the home nations compete against each other and the rest of the world, Wales have 'Hen wlad fy nhadau' (Land of my fathers) and England have 'God save the queen'.

The simple answer is for England to have their own national anthem and stop using 'God save the queen'.

Although according to this http://youtu.be/j617mImHVvk true Brits should sing 'Hen wlad fy nhadau', that way England can keep 'God save the queen' as their own national anthem. :y  ;)

ALL TOGETHER NOW !!....

Mae hen wlad fy nhadau yn annwyl i mi,
Gwlad beirdd a chantorion, enwogion o fri;
Ei gwrol ryfelwyr, gwladgarwyr tra mad,
Dros ryddid collasant eu gwaed.

Gwlad, gwlad, pleidiol wyf i'm gwlad.
Tra môr yn fur i'r bur hoff bau,
O bydded i'r hen iaith barhau.

Hen Gymru fynyddig, paradwys y bardd,
Pob dyffryn, pob clogwyn, i'm golwg sydd hardd;
Trwy deimlad gwladgarol, mor swynol yw si
Ei nentydd, afonydd, i mi.

(Chorus)

Os treisiodd y gelyn fy ngwlad tan ei droed,
Mae hen iaith y Cymry mor fyw ag erioed,
Ni luddiwyd yr awen gan erchyll law brad,
Na thelyn berseiniol fy ngwlad.

(Chorus)

Now if you were to write it in English we would understand it. Wouldn't sing it mind  ;D ;D :y

GSTQ should be reserved for exclusively British occasions or when a sportsman/woman or team is playing for Great Britain!  :y

The fact that us English use GSTQ at English occasions has caused this problem.  Jeruselum or Land of Hope and Glory should be the English anthem!  :y

The problem is that most of the English don't give a toss, until they perceive some sort of disrespect from the rest.....  ::)

What about Abide with me?? It's sung at every FA cup final by both sets of fans including Cardiff City not so long.
