Title: Advice on front pads
Post by: Terbs on 30 July 2012, 10:22:14
Hi all,

Need some advice on various front pads. (if in the wrong section, mods please move)

Not too long aqo I fitted new discs and pads (Mintex) However, the front pads have worn down very quick and my wheels are constantly black.

I have just checked the two biggest local spares (Autoparts) and (Europarts)......Autoparts have a Lockheed set for £30, whilst Europarts have a Pagid set for £26.
Not bothered about the price (but I have a contact who can get about 40% off those and delivered)

Are these makes any good. The fella at Autoparts did say they had their own make for £26, but in his opinion they were possibly softer than Lockheed.

Tony

I've used Pagid pads and shoes in the past with no problem.

trade club pads are £15 +VAT - IMO they've got better feeling than ferodo for example and are cheaper

if you cannot get a set locally, PM andyc here and he'll post to you

personally, its not worth the effort looking for pattern parts at those prices.

Yes, all manufacturers make good and "budget" pads. I would hope that, at the £30 level, you'd be getting a reasonably good quality pad but, IMHO, with trade club pads being a known quantity at half the price, I would just get a set of them. It doesn't make sense to buy something unknown and, If andyc has them in stock, in my experience, they will be on your doormat the next day if you give him a call. :y

It would be worth considering why the previous set wore so quickly, though. Did they wear evenly or perhaps the caliper seized on its' pins causing one side to wear prematurely? Are the brakes binding? Worth considering before replacing them, IMHO.

Tc pads from vx. Best balance on price v quality. £14 front axle set, or £100 for front axle disc pad set. Cheap, work, but alot of dust and not much feal at the pedal. Can sqeal.

Oe. Very expensive. But much less dust. Will not squeal.

Ebc green. Hopeless.
Ferrodo. No.  ...just no.

Note, there apears to be some difference in quality with pads in the tc disc set, and the tc pads alone set.

But for just pads. Vx trade club pads from any dealer. Not the best pads in the world, as i find them a little dead at the pedal, but for the price you can't beat them tbh.

Personally, I find the OE pads the best, I bought x2 sets from Jimbob, part no 9195077. I don't know whether these are available anymore from VX?
Any other pads IMHO are just a compromise. They are expensive, but very little brake dust and a much better feel.

Official TC price is £81 + VAT.

Suspect your dealer may have had some old stock, sold at the older price (very old, if it was about £65+VAT). Either that, or they just wanted shot of them.

Mintex and others do make some reasonable pads. However, the shite you buy from factors and egay are the budget shite. And they are *really* shite.

For cost v performance, TC at £14+VAT are impossible to beat. And a 'known'. They take reasonable abuse before fading, but are extremely dusty.

I'd lose the Mintex discs as well, they are utter shite as well. If you towed that pikey box of yours, I'd tell you to do replace them tomorrow.

I accept I'm hard on brakes, but if a cheap pad works for me, it will work for anyone IMHO. If you can live with the dust.

I can only state the current, official TC price. Each outlet can sell cheaper if they want

in my experience the more dusty the pads the better the braking but this is not scientificly proven :) i suppose it depends on how you drive, i use apec pads that are a reasonable price and quality, they felt crap at first but after a couple of hundred miles they came good, and they held up superbly round the nurburgring under some heavy braking :)

£14 VX ones on mine :y

They do take a kicking, no real issues with noise of fade :y, but they are quite dusty :-\ cleaning the wheels properly and finishing with a good coat of wax helps :y

I used to buy Apec ones every other pad change until I found out that TC ones were half the price  ::) get through pads every 20-25k with the discs lasting at 2 sets of pads. :y

Even at £85 + Vat, VX still cheaper than pattern, and far more predictable :y

You clearly aren't trying hard enough ;D

But I agree with your findings, except it appears I may be harder on brakes (but I work in Milton Keynes)...

For info, I get a few k from mine (5k, but I change at half worn), and discs last about 4 sets. So our discs last about same number of brake pads (assuming you wear your pads down to minimum.
