Use a proper browser, and disable all add-ons.

Both FF and Chrome are well known for exploits.

Although in this case I suspect something else. Using a proxy? Or ISP uses transparent proxy?

Also if using XP, go look in add/remove programs and see if there are any iffy sites that have annoyingly added a bit of thier own sowfware.

Like a lot of programs downloaed offer the choice of adding tools bars, even though we might de select them for install I have found a lot of them still get added but are just hidden after install. :-\

Quick vote of thanks to martin42 for posting about this, and TheBoy for the solution.

My missus was looking at her business website (on FF) and saw this same red font underlined spammy linkage malarkey.  Thought her site had been hacked and generally panicked.

I remembered seeing this thread...

Disabled addons and it went away briefly, but returned.

Went into add/remove programs and got rid of a thing called yondoo (IIRC), which seemed to do the trick.  No idea where that came from.

I'll recommend scanning with different free online scanners .. those self installing softwares sure will leave some traces elsewhere :-\

Thanks Cem, I've suggested that she does that if any of this comes back.

Oh, and I didn't remember the name of the offending program correctly, it was yontoo, not yondoo.

Yontoo.Pagerage is a browser extension for Internet Explorer, Chrome and Firefox that enables customization of ones Facebook profile.

Yontoo.Pagerage also displays advertising which is not stated when installed as bundled software.

Use Spybot to remove :y
