Title: Rear wheel bearing?

Hi all first off let me say what a great forum this is and have had loads of great help cheers!! Any way i have a humming sound from the rear of the car when moving at any thing over 15 mph the noise doesn't increase as i go faster but it does hum faster the faster i go if that makes any sense at all :D. i have checked the diff oil and that is fine and clean have also stripped the brakes down and cleaned them there also doesn't appear to be any slop on the prop shaft or drive shafts the only thing I can find is a very tiny movement in the 6 and 12 movement of the wheel bearings but i mean tiny. Andy clues guys?

have you checked the hand brakes, had a hum on mine and it was the hand brakes changed them and hum was gone. disc and brake shoes, and brake pads. inside the drum part was all pitted up.

Cheers for fast response but yeah had the brakes stripped down and cleaned them even tho they were fine i also backed the hand brake shoes right off and took it for a spin. Still the same!!!??

dose it make a sound while turning by hand? any clicking or clunking?

yep i have just rotated tires also it made no difference!!! mind this noise sounds more like mech humm than tire noise!!

Try driving car at normal speed on say motorway/dual carriage way and gentle steer from side to side ..ineffect transfering the weight and pressure to each side in turn .That should atleast identify which side the problem is,but does sound like a rear wheel bearing is starting to complain.

Given the difficulty or potentila cost in replacing it need to be very certain though first .

just an idea put some weight in back like 16-20 stone see if the sound is not there or louder. also do the rubber end on the rear drop lincs feel ok. should have a little movment but not alot.

Mine started doing this recently; the O/S rear bearing moans worse than a wife.

So there goes another £50!

have tried steering also brakeing and stuff non of which make a great deal of difference but the more i think about it it started after the floods we had up here so probs is the bearing!! :-[

just got home in the car and am not going to change owt till i know what the hell it is if i still worked in the garage i used to i would have put in a new diff even though i dont think its the diff!! >:(
