Probably replacing one of the mobiles in the house with an Iphone 4S tomorrow as her contract is up...
I know theres a fair few users of them on here.
How do you find the battery life in real life use?
Any major hints and tips on them?
Cheers
-
Battery will last a day easily with general use, phone, texting, web browsing app use, things that use GPS/Bluetooth sap the power.
Jailbreaking is easy at moment with stock 5.1 (better not discussed in public)
If its contract though, might be worth holding out for the next generation due in September/October....
-
Cheers, imagine the next one will carry a price premium to start with, and her old one is dying and shes desperate to replace it.
-
My 3GS lasts a day in reality. Can get 2 or 3 days if I disable stuff. 4 and 4s have better battery life.
5 is likely to be same price as 4s is now. But thats 21st Sep...
The trouble with them, apart from having to be gay to own one, is iTunes. iTunes is the work of Satan, positively the worse, most amateur bit of software ever released.
Mrs TB and I have had our gayphones for 2.5yrs, and her battery is just starting to have reduced life... ...which for a Li-ION battery charged daily, isn't too bad.

Cheers for that, handy to know real figures, plus her being a lady....occasional gay (well lesbian) tendancies are a good thing ;)
-
4 and 4s in our house. 1 day battery life easily. I have blu tooth, wifi and gps on permanently, and you know how much time it spends on line.
Hammer the 3G and it will die in about 10 hours iirc.
2 days without charge is not difficult if sensible, but it's best to charge daily obviously, as with any smartphone.
Chargers have stupidly short cables by the way.

Android is the way to go. :y

Ignoring jail braking etc for a minute, and considering the os only. Why so? :)
I am hearing similar at work, from those that have android, but they don't always have experience of gay phones to give a fair opinion.
Personally I find the majority of popular android hand sets way too big. But I havent looked into it in detail for some time.

Its the same with most things. Whatever you cut your teeth on is the one that will always be your favourite. I prefer my android but since wifey got her ipad she can't wait to 'upgrade' hers to iphone. Both will do the job but TB is right about itunes, it infects your life.
-
Oh yes, and icloud, that takes a bit of getting used to. Someone saving everything about your life and reminding you back it up ;D
-
Cheers all....
I agree, I prefer (and use) Android....she hates it and cant get on with any android phone she has tried.
Iphone, she's used a fair few and loves them...
Technical issues aside, which matter little to her, the one she likes using is ALL that matters. unless there is a big show stopper, which we havent found (yet)

Indeed. Horses for courses. I find Android cumbersome, and a PITA to use. And remember, before turning Homosexual, I was a WinMo 6.5 user, and I found Android more cumbersome than that ;D
Andriod *still* lacks a good email client for anything other than POP3 (and who in their right mind uses that ::)), and until that is resolved, Android remains in the 'not for me' category.
That said, I have no desire to change, despite my phone's age. The better battery and speed offered by iPhone 4/4S would be nice, but not nice enough to replace my 2.5yr old handset...
-

iTunes. To me that is a massive show stopper. On the very rare occasions I need it, I install it, then do what I have to do, then immediately remove it from the PC. It really is a heap of junk.
-
cheers for all the advice, it arrives tomorrow, gawd help me!

Android is fine for normal people ;D

gayphones crap long live the galaxy s11 or 3 :D

There is nothing wrong with the hardware (save for it being 12 months behind the rest), and there is nothing wrong with the software "per se".
Being unable to share a pic via Bluetooth with a "non authorised" Apple device is however akin to turning up for a gunfight armed with a knife IMHO.

Blu tooth is shite on crapple tbh.
...but then, isn't wifi, 3G via email just as easy?
Pah this is all boll@x anyway. Neither android or iOS are up to where Nokia where 15 years ago on functionality. Wake me up when there is something new. Oh sigh...
-
Forget crApple and get yourself the Samsung Galaxy S3 .... just got mine a month ago moving from iphone .... best thing i ever did :y
-
Arrived today, is active, and she loves it.
Ill stick with android, but she is very happy.
Getting her contacts on it took some doing mind!

I agree on all points :y
Legacy Windows Mobile did more than all 3 platforms (crApple/Android/Nokia) do now, 5 or 6 years ago. But needed constant tweaks or reboots, and was a bit flakey.
I did like Windows Mobile 6.5, but sadly the only handset manufacturers were HTC, and they concentrated on 'pub bragging' specs, rather than actual functionality and performance.
I went crApple after I bought Mrs TB one for her birthday, and liked the 'just works'. No glitches. No reboots. No constant tweaking. It 'just works'. Ironically, the iPhone interacts with Microsoft's own emaiil system than what Windows Mobile did (or does now)!
No desire to change. To be honest, there are only 2 viable smartphones - iPhone and Android. RIM and Nokia will not survive long (months), unless Microsoft buys one of them. Although I doubt this will happen, as MS themselves are having to shake themselves up and regain a focus on their core business.
Android is not for me until someone releases a usable email client.
But I lack any loyalty to Apple. I don't like the company, and I don't like the majority of their products. But their consumer devices (gayPod/gayPad/gayPhone) are class leading.

Should be able to sync contacts from old source.
Mrs TB and I just enter it into Outlook, and as long as the phone is within WiFi or Cellular range, it appears there within seconds.

The bloody thing wont connect to her car stereo bluetooth :(
connects to the one in mine no probs.
Thats apple for you I guess! May have to raise a support ticket, but £1 to 1p they will blame the stereo (which is perfect with any/exverything else)

I was right...
To quote, since IOS 5.1.1, we have a lot of compatibility problems, contact pioneer for a fix.
Right, yes, thats gonna happen, your software has introduced a problem, of course everyone else should fix it for you ;D
One of the first things I said was I know you wont fix this on the phone, I just want to add my voice in hope that the developers realise they need to fix it.
Ahh well, new software due in the autumn, fingers crossed for a fix, not holding my breath though.
-
My old Pioneer required the phone to be "discoverable" full time for it to connect, even when paired, is yours the same, perhaps? Or won't it even pair?
Most phones will let you leave them discoverable (my old crackberry did, as did the Nokia before it), but not the iPhone - but you actually shouldn't have to have a device discoverable once it's paired - that was a failing of my old Pioneer stereo, not the iPhone (I had a DEH-P85BT or something like that).
-
This is a DEH-P55BT...
It pairs fine
wont autoconnect (unless discoverable / in the bluetooth menu)
even then, once used...noone can hear anything, its as if both lines are dead.
Works perfectly in the slightly newer DEH-P700BT in mine. (thats the best solution to be honest...pick up another off ebay, has a few features id like to see in both cars, better colour match, better inputs, both already talk to the steering controls and MID display.)
-
I got a HTC and i love it wouldn't have anything else :y
-
Bluetooth is a sod on older devices, as the specs for each profile constantly changed, and in some cases were open to interpretation. Great job, Mr Ericsson.
crApple's BT implementation is poor. Actually, non existent. However, the BT 'Handsfree' profile is pretty good/robust IME.
Try Pioneer for an update, but I suspect you know what the answer is. I used to like Pioneer stuff 20 years ago, but they 'did a Sony' and started resting on their laurels and traded more on their brand, rather than develop great products. IMHO.
iOS6 is reported to have a far more complete BT stack, though I suspect the Handsfree profile will probably be an even later revision spec, and if the Pioneer has fallen behind already....
-
this stereo doesnt even have an update facility
mine does....and last had one when nokia brought out the n-series
worked well, just bluetooth a special jpg to the stereo.
Not holding 'much' hope on apple so will look at a replacement stereo I think (same as mine from ebay) as not much newer from them will talk to the mid and steering unfortunately, and saves buying another adaptor.

Can't input a nokia car kit to the existing whatever it is, and have the phone talk to that instead? IOS 5.1.1 works with Nokia bt car kit.
Just in case that's a solution. :-\

Actually mine is a 4. Hers is a 4s which I can check if needs be.
Presume the new software of which they speak will be iphone5. :-\
-
I guess technically yes, could be done.
IOS6 rollout for all afaik.
-

iOS 6 will go on 3GS and higher.
-
Yes, they do that with new device release. Or have done in the past.
I await fan boy comments from the Groomer ;D ...but I'm still waiting for a smartphone that, being a cake and eat it type of guy, does everything and is stable, with decent os.
Oh sigh...
-
Has she found the lack of flash yet? Some pages and videos not available etc?

Would not fancy OS 6 on 3G-S, it struggles with 5!
-

I had the same problem on my ipad, but you can download an app called Photon that you can use to browse flash enabled websites or view flash content. It works well :y

Whilst that's good news Josh mate, and helpfull :y
It's not really something we should have to bugger about with. The polotics and back biting crApple get up to is... Disappointing. As we speak there's wranglings over google maps being dropped in favour of tomtom. You tube app dropped in favour of, well, nothing afaict. Why? licenses with google expired. Arrogance abounds.
No wonder there are so many Android owners.
It's upgrade time soon. Will have a look what's around then. :)

Google Maps and gayTube definately dropped in iOS 6, more due to a spat with Google, rather than a tie-in with Tomtom (Google also own gayTube).
From a technical security perspective, I can see the reasoning for lack of Flash (and other similar frameworks), and not purely due to the poor state of Flash. It can break security of the device, which crApple will claim makes the device more vulnerable to attack (it does), and cynics will claim it reduces crApple's tight grasp of the platform (it does). But, either way, this should not become the user's problem.
TBH, I don't miss Flash on the phone. Never really noticed its not there. Adobe has pretty much said that Flash is to be abandonned. We can hope utube is abandonned with it, but I'm not that lucky.
For info, Windows 8 in its native mode will not support Flash either. Or Java. Or any other browser plugins. These technologies are not required with HTML5, and web designers will have to pull their finger out and drop all this old shite. But they won't. Until they *have* to.
Up until now, I can only think of one good website that implements Flash technology in a well thought out, integrated way. Thats Oracle's My Oracle Support site. The flash site is being decommisioned in 2 days in favour of an HTML format. Flash has no use in the modern world ;)

I have no problem with progress. But when I can't view a page that the rest of the world can, that gets my goat. The more I get to know the IT industry, like the car trade, the more crap I realise it is.
Still, as all things are relative, coming from an n900 I should be gratefull for a half arsed job I suppose. Sigh...
...I'm some times accused of being negative. That's not the case, I am way way too positive it seems. The negativity is a result of the disappointment.
But as you say. At least it works. :)

Being the eternal pessimist has a huge advantage. I'm never disappointed.
