Title: Rotary Haters Look Away Now. Piccies of Mrs Opti's RX-8
Post by: Field Marshal Dr. Opti on 03 August 2012, 12:51:33
This is Mrs Opti's new car. She has joined the RX-8 owners forum..........they have informed her that the RX-8 does not come with a trip computer, apparently owners would find them "depressing" ;D ;D

I find it slightly cramped, but I'm six-one. Anyone a little shorter should be fine. :y

When I first saw this car it was sitting in a  double garage next to an equally immaculate 1989 ZX-10.The guy had it main dealer serviced every 12 months despite rarely driving it.

The Mazda DSR printout shows.

2010.........5696 miles...........12,500 mile/12 month service completed.

2011.........7501 miles...........25,000 mile/24 month service completed

2012.........8384 miles...........37,500 mile/36 month service completed.

How crazy is that?

The previous owner certainly didn't seem short of a bob or two. :y

Personally, I've never heard of this Mazda Dexelia shite before. Is it any good?

Annual servicing regardless of mileage. It's the minimum I would expect from a FSH car.

If you want to know how painful noise can be,take the exhaust of it and then start it. :o ;D
I used to marshall at a race track years ago where several people raced Mazda rotary engined cars (RX3 ?) with straight through exhausts, and the noise was excruciating. Maybe I should track them down and sue them for my  Tinnutus. ;D

A mate of mine used to have a Westfield with a 13b in. It was as loud at idle as mine is at full chat. 120+ dBa at 1m. Revved like an angry wasp, though. :D

I do like the RX-8's and I am very tempted to get one after the Omega, Drove one in work and they driver really well and pick up nicely, can get decent ones for not a lot of money and the majority are well looked after, people get put off by the rotary engine after the RX-7s but don't seem to realise these more modern rotary engines are much more reliable than the earlier ones, they do tend to flood if you turn them off whilst the engine is cold though.

I remember reading about them before, very poor reliability which in turn reduced the value of the car and all that was needed to solve the problem was a revised tip seal design, its amazing how something from so long ago when the rotary engine was so new to the public can have a lasting effect on people thoughts towards the engine.

Quote
a common "cure" for an ailing rotary engine was to simply swap it for a Ford V4 "Essex" engine (as found in Mk1 Transits) since it was one of the few engines compact enough to fit in the Ro80's engine bay. Thus in an ironic twist, one of the smoothest engines in the world was replaced by one of the roughest.

 ;D

I saw an Ro80 on the road fairly recently. By the noises it was making, it didn't have a Ford V4 under the bonnet either (an easy one , that!).

The amount I see on t'ebay as "spares or repairs", with grumbly-bits, scares me off  :'(

Note the secondary pipes on the exhaust. Cooling using exhaust gases to pull cool air through the engine. Exhaust internals used to visibly glow red hot. :)

A cross between two and four stroke if ever there was one.
