Post by: prestigesec on 15 April 2008, 21:51:59
Hi, been looking at this omega for myself for work it is exactly what i want and guy said he is looking for about a grand. I know the abs ecu is an issue but take that out for now and do you think its worth it?

Are you sure it was same seller as just looked at his history and no record of the car?

It does look tempting, 3.0 manual etc but why has'nt he Mot'd it?
Might be worth a punt but tread carefully. He wants a grand, offer him 5 or 600 at auction end but view it first. He may be desperate to sell, leaves you some spare cash to fix it up. 8-)

Iam 99% sure because i was going to bid on it but the price went higher than i was happy to pay for it. The photos of the car are in the same place and the winning bidder in feb was a motor trader an won it for over £1200 but if i was you ask the seller as to why its back on ebay and go from there. It might even be worth asking on the forum if a member with a tech 2 who lives close could go and have a look for you.

It all stands to be the abs ecu which to be honest you can drive without it, have my road angel for speed. There is a map feature on the forum but it wont let me get into it, do you know why?

Too many unknowns ....

How long has the speedo not worked ??? so what is the TRUE mileage

ABS ECU could be an expensive fix

Air bag light = MOT failure .. what does THAT need to fix ?? might just need a Tech2 .. but could be something much more damning ....

I would only look at it for £300-£400 with a view to breaking for profit. Then IF .. big IF ... it is fixable maybe sell as a runner.

Its nowt to do with the law IMHO ...

Faulty ABS/TC, Faulty Speedo, Possible Faulty Steering  ( the weighting also comes from ABS and can also fail - I KNOW ), Faulty air bag system.

Adds up to downright dangerous, so driving in that condition is not just illegal .. its bloody stupid.

When my ABS ECU failed the steering weighting became intermittent as well as the speedo/abs/tc problems ... one minute the car drove normally, next it was as heavy as lead .... NOT good when cornering at any normal speeds.

The air bag light being ON means the airbag system WILL NOT OPERATE (AFAIK).

As already said .. ANPR systems will tag you as no MOT in milliseconds.

All the points are MOT fails.

I would not be prepared to risk driving a car in such condition.

Just my opinion of course ...  :)

It's a 2000 car with 2003 wheels and most 3.0 had Sat Nav (I think it may have been an option on the early 3.0 facelift Elites). Also manual is a rare sight in an Elite as well.

I'll get me coat.

Sat nav was an option from May 2000 but this car does not have.

This is a big if but if prestigesec does buy it and it goes back on the road which is going to be the best place for it then great but if it ends up going to the big scarp yard in the sky then i would just like to put in first bid on the steering wheel because thats the only reason why i was going to buy it back in Feb :y

Really needs someone with a Tech II to have a nose at it, BBA Reman do a repair service on the ABS ECU and the Airbag light could be something as simple as one of the cables under the seat coming adrift (common problem on Vectras and Astras). As always though it's down to how brave you are - Bought as seen / buyer beware.

Instead of looking on fleabay .. why not look at the "for Sale" section of OOF ... far better chance of a decent car methinks.

Or go to Autotrader ... I have very little trust of cars on fleabay

Don't get disheartend mate, it's always the way with car buying when you have a specific spec / criteria you can never find the right one, the moment you find it four others pass you on the way home.

Dont be put off its just some people don't look after there cars and they end up like this.
Does it have to be an elite and does it have to be petrol and what is your price range.

Ideally want every extra you can get must be estate and would like the 3.0L yes if not would maybe go for manual diesel, must be leather too and a nice blonde for the passenger seat ;D

£1200 for effectively a ten year old car.....

Thats approaching facelift money.

There is no word of a service book but if it has full service history with stamped book then i think it would be a good buy but not much more than the reserve :y

I will be glad when this is all over and i have the car i want spent the 1st 2 months of year looking for a car for the misses and the next 2 looking for myself. Would prefer the facelift one but everyone putting me off completly now.  :-/ :-/ :-/

Its a bit more than you want to spend but i have a 51plate DTI CD spec estate that has just had a new turbo from vauxhall fitted (£800 bill) and i have seen leather going on ebay for not bad prices also you can have my wifes friend as she is blond and earns good money too so she would pay her way :y ;D ;D ;D

Why not go for a CD or CDX?

CDX is only missing things like photochomatic rear view mirrior, 17' wheels rear spoiler and possibly leather.

it's a compromise i know, but it will open up your search a bit more. and the parts that are missing could be bought and added by yourself
