Title: Fogged headlamps
Post by: a2reed on 08 August 2012, 08:19:17
Chaps ... what with all the sun we have had over the last few summers!!!!! not to mention the rain and grit off the road... my headlamps are getting a bit fogged on the outside....

On close inspection it looks as though the standard headlamps have plastic fonts to them and it looks as though they come off ...question is how to make them as good as new or can you just buy the lenses for a few quid

Anyone tried this?

I believe there's a guide on here that tells you how to clean them up. I didn't follow the guide when I did mine recently, I used a rotary polisher & some medium paint cutting compound (or T-cut) & then I used Auto Glym Super Resin Polish to finish off. I think the lenses are bonded on & as for removing them I don't know. Though if you use my way you won't need to remove.
Also mask off the surrounding paint area with insulation tape to avoid t-cutting the paint. Don't use masking tape because it soaks up the moisture from the polish & fulls off.

I did mine with a 3M Headlight Restoration kit last weekend. I work at 3M and it was old stock donated to my 'Garage fund'  ;)

Worked well. They give you a Back up Pad to put in your drill and velcro type sanding discs to go on it.

Starts with an P500, then P800, then a P3000 Trizact material disc.

Next is a cutting compound then polish.

Worked well, but I found I needed to do some P1500 after the P800 as the P3000 wasn't man enough to get all the P800 scratches out. Takes some nerve as it gets worse before it gets better, but I stuck with it and now have 95% clear lights. Much better than before and it took me a couple of hours.
