Well.... I was actually looking for something like a cheap Veccy, Mondeo, or 406 diesel estate to use as a mobile skip for a few weeks while renovating a house.... ::) but everything I saw the owners wanted good money for piles of crap!! :o
So I've ended up with a 1998 C250 Elegence Turbo Diesel Estate, with 6 months tax and 7 months MOT. Its pretty scruffy and has lots of scabby bits, but the interior is not bad and will come up nice with a good clean!! The best bit though is that it has had only had 2 owners and has loads of history!! :y Which shows in the drive and handling and it's probably one of the smoothest diesels I've ever had! :)
It's abit strange though that someone would maintain a car mechanically, keep the service history up to date etc, yet neglect the bodywork.... :-\
-
shame is for them there known for rusting badly, great cars mechanically though!
-
Nice big estate that , are you going to tidy the bodywork up :)
-
Well the plan was just to get something cheap and cheerful, use, abuse and get rid! ;) but already I'm kinda liking it! and it's fairly economical if driven like an elderly Merc driver!! ;D So...... Maybe! ;)

Pics?

Needs some body filler and paint before the gallery :) ;) ;D

agreed, I used to work for MB and the old C classes and E classes are famed for their rust - my SIL has an E300 Avantgarde TD, mechanically it pulls like a train and drives lovely, but the bodywork is rotting around it. Its a 97R with less then 70k on the clock.

mercs go on forever, had a few myself. the only issue appears between about 1997-2004 when they changed the paint spec, hence the rust issues.
My 1990 SL had great paint whereas my 1998 E55 had small rusting to the front arches.
-
I have to be honest, I'm tempted to have a go! ::) I havn't done any body work since I was a teenager.... and my mates still take the piss about my Renault 5 that I dug all the rust out and had to use a piece of ice cream box as a backing plate as one of the holes was that big!!! ;D
Still, at least I had a go, more than they did, the useless twuts!! ;)
Maybe I'll put some before and after pics up! :)

Have a go tigger , will be good to see some before and after pics :) Ive used all sorts for backing a rust hole up ... chicken wire once :-X ;D

Nice comfortable cars, I have a C200 saloon of similar age. The rust issue is a bit disappointing on what was supposed to be an upmarket brand, but mechanically they are pretty bullet proof.
-
I recently sold a W124 estate which was in excellent condition for a 95 car,I think it was the most comfortable car I've ever owned :y

yep, the moved to some sort of eco-friendly water based paint around that time - it's cost MB-UK thousands in warranty claims, often with cars having to be done more then once.
Shocking really for a premium brand.

It is , especially when earlier cars were so well built and almost bullet proof
I preffered my old merc to the later one(s) i had. the only saving grace were the AMG engines in them :)

ah yes, there's nowt like the sound of an AMG lump on full song - have to say, I nearly gave myself whiplash in an AMG SLK - it lauched off the forecourt a bit faster then I thought it would lol

yep the AMG engines are pretty good at full chat. The C36 i had sounded incredible when thrashed, whereas the E55 was more like a sledgehammer :D with its bonkers torque

So I've had a bit of a day with the Merc!! :(
Loaded her up with crap for the tip this morning and then she wouldn't start! :-\ I kept trying until the battery went flat, then realised that the battery's in the boot!! Crap!! >:( So had to unload all the crap to get at the battery!! ::)
Thing is I was in Wales so didn't have jumpleads or spare battery or anything like that, so phoned the breakdown company. Happily, the breakdown guy turned up 45 minutes later, took a quick look, noted the fuel light was on asked me if I had been driving round with low fuel, to which I replied in the affirmative. :-[ He took the fuel filter off and it didn't have much fuel in it. He then tried starting it by squirting 'Quickstart' in the intake and it tried to go! As he didn't have any fuel on board, he decided that there wasn't much more he could do, but was confident that if recovered to his garage they could get it going quite easily there! ::)
Now as I had to be back in Dorset tonight, this seemed a reasonable plan and the recovery truck turned up promptly. We were soon at a nearby garage, where a surly mechanic put some diesel in, tried the quickstart and when it wouldn't go he declared the injector pump was dead!! ::)
They asked me could I leave it with them, but I said that I had to be in Dorset tonight so they got back to the breakdown company, told them they couldn't fix it and I got a ride in the recovery truck back to Dorset!! :) I parked it facing down the steep hill outside my house, tried to start it.... and away she went!!! :D :)
She's a bit clattery and dosn't seem to have much power, but she's running!! I'll put a new fuel filter in, as hopefully it's full of dirt sucked from the tank when I was running around low on fuel. :-\

You are like swmbo, why oh why do people run around in the car with no fuel, what if you got stuck in a traffic....... ::) ::) ::)
-
I had a quick shuffty as to how my battery would be removed. It's under the driver's seat ...... looks like the car was built around it! ??? ??? ???
Fuel pumps generally suck from a swirl bowl in the tank, so the the pump always has something to suck from. As the pump always sucks from the same place, whether the tank is full of very nearly empty, it'll not make any difference to the amount of sh1te that might be in the tank.

Hopefully not from the car crack quickstart making it knock it's nuts off :-\

She's hoping that you might borrow her car & fill it for her! ::) ::)

That has happened, but it's not a money thing, we have a joint account, so makes no difference who pays.... :D :D :D

We don't any more ....... what's hers is hers & what's mine is hers too, so makes no difference who pays ::) ::) ::)

unlucky on the problem front. put some fuel in! ;D
anyway my mate had a T reg. Eclass i think it was....drove lovely like the rest of the guys have said. body work was fine if i remember.
i absolutely love mercedes though so im a bit biased. :D i'd love an S Class. ANY S class ;)

The thing is I didn't think the fuel was uber low. :-\ It had just gone below 1/4 full, but the light was on... :-\
I'm wondering if there is an air getting into the fuel system as I had it parked uphill last night and as the air has got in, all the fuel has run back into the tank? ??? Having said that though it's been like that all week and been fine! :-\

It does sound like you are drawing air somewhere, pay close attention to the injector leak off pipes and the return small bore pipes as these have a tendancy to go hard and brittle, they may not leak diesel out but can let air in :y

Yeah, it's a good diagnostic tool for when you think the engine is knackered. Spray some of that in and it ends the uncertainty - you know it's knackered. :(
-
I left it parked facing downhill on a fairly steep hill last night and it started first time this morning! :)
That's all I've done to it today but I did pop into Halfords and got a bottle of fuel system cleaning additive stuff, see if that makes a difference. ???
I'll strip it down and have a good look round soon! :y
Hopefully no lasting damage from the Quickstart!! :-\

That Merc that has Omega future replacement written all over it :y
