Is our resident auto/manual guru still a member? I've not seen any posts from him for a while? ::) ::) ::)
You'll get as many answers for either. Horses for courses ....

I'd say if theres nothing between the two cars when you see them (ie assuming that one isn't a dog where the other is fine..)go for the manual.
The auto box is well known for trashing its thrust washer (replacement 'box time) - the box on mine went at about 88k (previous owner had a second hand box rebuilt and installed).
Don't know of any issues other than obv having to replace clutches, but I'd say the driving experience will be better with the manual, and you'll get marginally better consumption.

But I'd say go for the auto every time. There's 150 000 miles on my car & the thrust washers in the gearbox are still where Vauxhall put them. The driving experience is far far better for me without fannying about with 3 pedals.
I can think of issues with manuals. There's been a few requests here for another dual mass fly wheel. They're only about £800 a pop new.

horses for courses then :y ;)

Before i got my mig estate auto i had a manual and hated the thought of a auto but i came round after some convincing from the hubby!
never had any snags with a manual.
had years free motoring with my auto box until it got floodedand now after replaceing the box i have sprung a ATF leak. which is fixable just got to take the box off again:(
ITs personal choice. but make sure you take the auto for a drive and put it through its paces and see how it feels through the gears. if it has any problems stear clear of the car,
good luck with your choice....be wise and think clearly! :y

If you want a quiet, relaxed drive, even in traffic, no contest automatic.
It's what the Omega is all about.
I run mine to very high mileages, no problems. I do hope I don't regret saying that.

Definitely manual..Cheap to service..Consumes less fuel..
and if you want performance quick than an auto unless its a SMG..

Cheers guys and gals thanks for your input :y :y

Just buy the better car. End of. :y

For me its always been
My comfy cruisers and motorway muchers - Auto's
Round Town, drive like my hair is on fire - Manule
the only execption to this was with my last supra turbo, that was a auto, but to be fair, it was no back road hacker

Rather than one being better than the other, I think it's all down to personal preference. Mine is auto and I really like it but I would still prefer manual for added driver involvement and better economy. :y
As previously said........horses for courses. ::)

A nice auto is 10000000000000000000000000 times better than a manual.
Just my opinion of course 8-)

Manual for economy and for playing......
Auto for driving to work and back ::)
-
Auto for me but saying that i'm lazy ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

anything but an omega hopefully ;)

Oh my rather god i just got back from test driving 2 manuals and i have one question how on earth does anyone think that gearbox is acceptable that has to be the worst gearbox i have ever driven they feel like there sat in a bowl of egg custards and have such a long throw on them that the auto would be quicker, than the journey between gears in the manual. Is this general feeling or is it just me?
-
From the pro manual camp, just you.
From the pro-auto camp, its why auto's have a following...... ;)

Is it different in the MV6? Surely no one can say that, that is a nice gearbox can they?

I'm happy with the manual box in mine. I do not do lots of motorway cruising but do lots of countryside, back lanes, across the county type driving. I find the manual more interesting, keeping me more involved with the car, rather than a point and squirt auto...
As said at the start, horses for courses and personal preference and all that....
Personal opinion - I am happy that I could comfortably, all other things being equal and when placed side by side, out drag an auto version of the same car and arrive at destination well ahead of the auto without undue effort....
..... cue alternate views! ;D

I take it then you have never driven an Escrap or Orion - those gearboxes are rubbish - I ended up destroying one because it wouldn't do 1-2 but did 1-4 instead.
These were pool cars in a previous job and replaced some Rover 216 (Ballade type)
