hello there i need help.
fuse blown 80amp. changed fuse. got home on 1 2 3. drive gear not working.i have just bought a gearbox e c u.but just a thought would the gearbox selector faulty. its just the fitter started car up and put it in gear and he tells me there is a short somewhere.would you help please.
-
Why did you buy a new ECU ???
Which 80A fuse is it, I'll look through wiring diagrams...
-
because i went down the route where i thought while i could only get the first 3 gears it might be the gearbox e c u.it was one of the big fuses on top of battery box.

Yep, 80A fuses are on top of the battery.
To track down why it blew it would be helpful to know which one.

Reading from left to right in battery fusebox
FV1 (80 amp) - is ABS and traction control
FV2 (80 amp) - is Main Engine Relay and glowplug timer
FV3 (30 amp) - is Motronic Control Unit
FV4 (80 amp) - is to the ignition switch
FV5 (80 amp) - is to fuses 1,6,7,10,20,25,27,29
FV6 (80 amp) - is to fuses 5,12,17,24, 33 (air con)
If yours is petrol will not have FV2

no its a td

if the e c u to the gearbox went. would it blow one of the 80 amp fuse

Doubt it, it would take out one of the smaller fuses first.
-
Can you tell us which 80A fuse blew. Then we can help :)
Where in Northampton are you?

well hello there again
well this is the state of play ref the td estate. car was going so lovely.when it suddenly stopped with all the electrics went dead except the hazzard warning lights.when i opened the fuse box on the top of battery one of the 80amp fuses was blown.cant remember which one as i went into panic mode myself. but anyway i found a 50amp fuse and then all the electrics reapeared .got into car put it in gear and found that i only had 1 2 3 gears. no d .drive.got the car back from leeds to swindon. then took it into a garage i know.well i did buy autobox e c u.as i was told it may be that.the outcome is that the wiring loom under glove box is getting hot. the centre gearbox lights stay on all the time.ie there is a short going on. now ive been told when you start car up of which it starts up fine. when you put it in gear the engine stops and there is smoke coming from glove box area.and of course the gearbox centre counsul lights are on all the time. the gearbox e c u was fitted but this did not make a difference.garage owner do not know what to do now and said its time it went in the sky to heaven. befour i make up my mind what to .would somebody help me to put me on the right path. the said car has the ar35 autobox in.so please help. as i have splashed out a lot of money on this car to keep it going we are talking a best part of £1500 with labour bills. so you can amagine im abit pissed off now.

FFS, get it away from people who don't know what they are doing, and to someone who does. I'm sure there are local members who can assist - finding a shorting out wiring fault should be fairly trivial.
Sadly, if we don't know which fuse blew, it needs someone to actually look, as virtually everything runs through one of those 80A fuses.
-
for what i have written on this site. would the gearbox selector switch cause me all this heartache
-
As stated it really would help to know which 80amp fuse blew, then some1 can then go into more detail as to what the problem is,as you have replaced it with a 50 amp it should be easy enough to tell which 1 it is :y
-
i think it was the 2nd one in from the front of car. anyway i have got a gearbox selector switch.and it will be fitted tomorrow i hope.if this is fitted and no improvement . then im afraid it will have to go in the sky or somebody buy it off me with a spare engine.engine has all the stuff on it ie the fuel pump the alternator its all there just have to put it in . i also have a fairley new starter and also a turbo unit. plus other stuff i have collected. this will be the last omega i will have of which i have had five.
-
if you stil want to sell at the end of the month i will be interested!! as i will be in swindon!! :y
-
yep i let you know. but i must be fair to tell you. with the spare engine and all . it wont be going for a song.it has a recent mot and tax. as i have said i have spent well over £1500 on it to keep it. but i am losing interested in it.

IMHO, you need to stop replacing parts at random and start trying to diagnose the problem in a logical sequence.
Clearly there is a wiring problem in the loom if the supply to the gearbox selector lights is staying live. I'm sure this is probably why the 80A fuse blew and there was smoke from the loom. I can't see how the gearbox selector switch can have caused this; yes, it's loosely related to the lights but not proven faulty yet, so why change it? Ditto the ECU.
If we know what fuse failed we can start working through the wiring suggesting things to check.
If you intend continue to throw money at new parts until the problem goes away, you might as well just cut your losses and sell the car, because a problem like this won't get solved that way.

well here we have update on the omega td.there was a brown wire that ran by the engine ecu that was melted and melting other wires in its path. wire is now repaired. the lights on the centre consul on the gearbox are now working ok. but and there is a big but.in 1 and 2 gear on the automatic seems to i dont no but when you put it in these gears or put it in drive and let it do itself it sort of rebuff ie it wants like stop .its ok in 3rd and now drive. of which im not sure its working in drive. not driving it that far since its been repaired. so people please tell me what it is.

Sorry, can you explain that clearer and more concisely - no matter how many times I read it, I couldn't understand it, sorry :-[

right ok.the brown wire that runs from around the engine e c u was chared.this was also melting the other wires aswell. i have now got all this repaired.now the problem i have got is the engine is running fine.when you engage in gear from drive mode and its in first gear and 2nd gear it wants to like pull back.or engine is going to stall.all other gears are fine.except i dont feel its going into drive mode. but i havn't driven it very far to find out properly.any ideas please.could it be torgue converter. i dont know.as it has been said. ive bought this and i bought this.i just need abit of help to remedy all this please.
-
today i took the old beast out .still have the problem with 1 and 2 gear doing silly buggers.please read previous post.the kick down do not work. sometimes it wont change down unless i do it manually.the drive mode did work after going after 50mph.which is normal i have found out since having the car.on the computer board i get automatic gearbox after running about 15mins.so any ideas please.

any ideas mr the boy

any ideas mr the boy
Really sorry, I cannot understand what the symptoms are :-[
In 1st gear, the car won't pull away? Or will pull away, but really slowly?
Any fault lights or warning messages on the dash?
Any codes stored in engine ECU?
-
hello there
yes car do pull away in 1st 2nd and the 3rd.thats where it stays. when it should go up enother gear ie 4th gear i suppose then auto gearbox lights up on dash.then i have to use it like a manaul.but hey ho . i have decided to convert to a manual. of which i have all what i need i believe except the centre walnut bit thats sits around the gear stick. would you have one . or would you know if anybody has one or can i buy it somewhere else where you might know.its a 94 99 model. thankyou for your help .
