Title: Checking a cars history.
Post by: Olympia5776 on 29 August 2012, 01:09:47
What checks can be done on a UK car re MOT, Insurance etc via DVLC ?
I've speaking to a seller who says the car was stored for 23 years and want to see if there is any way I could confirm this without his paperwork.

You need to log into this site:-

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/Mot/DG_10020539

But you need the the document reference number from the V5C registration certificate.  :y

I don't think you'll get 23 years worth of history though. I think MOT history is only available since the MOT stations went online, could be wrong though ;)

Can only go back as far as 2005, and that's only if the car has been presented for one since then.
In Olympia's case there won't be any history at all if the car really has been in storage for that amount of time, except for any written paperwork the vehicle has with it.

Seem to remember from years ago that a car would fall off the system if it wasn't taxed for 2 years or more, so dont be surprised if it comes back as Unregistered or Vechile not known.

Should be able to do a Tax check on the above Site, without the V5, see if it finds the Car.

AskMid.com probably wont tell you much unless the cars insured.

Thanks lads ,
The seller and myself have been passing e mails back and forth and I'm quietly optimistic that all he says is true.
The car was put into storage in 1989 along with other cars he bought at the time. During the lay up it was serviced and worked on to maintain it and copious quantities of Waxoyl applied and reapplied as the photos he's sent show.
He says he MOT'd the car just over a year ago and took it to several shows but it's now Sorn'd again.
I expect to be speaking to him later this evening and I'll get all the info then.
If all goes well It's Braintree via Ryanair next week to see and touch......... ::)
Can I not recall a Gov. site that shows the current tax liability of a car based on it's reg. number only ?
I can't check the link above because I don't have Old or current MOT cert.

The .gov one is here, just dont put the V5 details in.

OK - you can get three things.....

firstly, form DVLA you can get the information we've been talking aboot. Thats if it's MOT'd and taxed now. No use to you.

secondly, from the Police, you can get them to check the Police central computer information. So that's if it's been stolen, the owner's details, etc. BUT you need to show a good reason before they'll look it up. AND they won't tell you the answers. You need to ask for example "do I need to worry about it having been stolen ?" to which they'll answer yes of no. Of little use to you, especially if it's not in the UK.

thirdly, you can apply to the DVLA for the full history, so that's everything in their file - actually quite a lot. When I've done this before, it's been pages and pages of information. BUT you can only do this if you have the V5 in your name.

so not much help I'm afraid.

You can get MOT details and more usefull, MOT History free off the .gov site, if you dont have the V5 you can use a test number from an old MOT cert or Refusal, and it will go back from that date, so the newer the Ticket the more info you get.

What a fiasco. >:(
Spoke to the elderly owner last night who professed to be a semi retired Lecturer in Motor Vehicle Restoration  ::)
Bought the car in 1989 but hadn't kept a reciept for 23 years, stored in his B.I.L's facility so no reciepts for storage and couldn't be precise on the number of owners.
Told me the car was last MOT'd over two years ago and out of tax although DVLC shows that tax is due on 1-11-12.
Couldn't remember a number of simple things about the car but interestingly recalled a car that was sold in Ireland about 14 months ago right down to colour, location and price ......
The photos he sent were all dated 2 years ago but after he told me they were recent there was a short silence when I told him that all digital photos are encoded with date etc.
Upon cross examination  ;) it transpired that the car had been welded in most of the areas that rusty examples would require although he advertised it as original and carefully stored.
Absolute dreamer who couldn't even prepare a logical story to give any provanace to the car ,which incidently had never been wet other than during an occassional wash yet one photo showed the arc of the window wipers over road dirt.
A no brainer in Braintree sort of sums it up........ ;D
Oh it was a BMW 635 bye the way.........
