Title: i love my mv6
Post by: scottambrose on 31 August 2012, 08:18:33
but i just cant get rid of the vibration i get between 65mph and 80mph its through the whole car its been balanced 3 times by different places and ats have stuck it on their fine balancer and its spot on. i tried to swap one rear wheel with the spare but its a space saver and cant really compare with that on. does anyone local to mid devon have an omega i could borrow two wheels from for 5 minutes to get upto speed and see if its the wheels at fault or a suspension/hub issue.  im getting really peeved now its ruining an otherwise great car

Not sure how much vibration you are getting but i had a similar problem simply replaced the tyres and it was sorted

the two rear wheels needing a heck of alot of weights on them to balance one wheel has about a 20cm line of stick on weights. the tyres are wanli? i think

ive got the same issue at the minute but mine is a wheel weight issue most definatly as my 16 CD wheels didnt vibrate but when i put my 17 Elites on i did notice one of the weight bars was very loose it was fine for about a week then i assume it came off and had the vibration ever since but im putting new tyres on soon so not really bothered

Its still a balancing issue.

Omegas are very, very sensitive to balancing, and in some cases, needs to go to a specialist (which rules out most tyre places and most dealers).

That amount of weights, however, points to an issue with either the rim (most likely) or tyre (lets face it, Wanli's are the cheapest of the shite available)

Small possibility its the propshaft, but I think the weights, and the fact that only the incompitents have looked at it so far, really do tell a story ;)

I agree with the boy, if you have that many weights on one wheel i would be thinking buckled wheel or out of round tyre, i can't believe the tyre shops don't pick up on things like this?

The Fast Fit places in the UK don't.  Suffered this myself many times, esp when I had those chocolate prefacelift MV6 wheels.

ats had a good look at wheel and tyres and couldnt find anything and the wheels are in mint condition no marks atall id edge my bets on it being the tyres. they look ok but as you say they are cheap ones. shame theres nowhere around here other than ats national etc

Look for signs of flatspots on the inside edge og the rim (the spoked side is more robust, as supported bt spokes)

Lose the wankli tyres mate  :y

Even without the vibration, bin the wankli's.

Thing is, if the inner rim is buckled or bent out of round in any way, the new tyres will vibrate too, and the inperfections will wear the new tyre out of round. So even if the rim is then repaired or replaced, you'll still get a vibration if those tyres are re fitted, as they won't be round either. I have that t shirt.(obviously there is a time factor though)

We found a few dings on another members car in this thread he didn't know he had, and one tyre was split in 3 places, all on the inside rim/sidewall of various wheels. Mot missed the badly split tyre completely.

I have had wheels balanced and checked for damage that has been missed completely "Yeah that's alright mate, you'll have no trouble with them" only to find a vibration on the first motorway.

Jack each corner yourself and spin each wheel in turn. Get under there, with car on stands. Use anything as a gauge against the rim (a cordless drill is perfect) just go give a reference and highlight any wobbles, if you like. But any out of round, dings or ossalations will be visible, and will give a vibration no matter how well balanced the wheel is.
Then do the same with the tyres, check each one for roundness, ossalations, damage, bulges, splits, cuts or foreign objects.

Once your certain your new tyres won't be worn unevenly or affected by the rims, then fit new tyres, but it would be ideal to find the definate fault before doing anything, so you know your spending money in the right area.

Also, look into 5stud balancer, as opposed to the normal cone balancer, if you haven't already.

Toik it for long drive today and made some observations at 55mph the steering wheel visably shakes then it goes until 65ish and then theres slight vibration through the car which gets worse until about 85 if I bang it in neutral and coast is still there the vibration is insonsistant in that, sometimes at 70 its fine then a mile, later its, there

At any point could this be described as an osolation, or even a wobble ? As opposed to a vibration. Although its similar.
Slightly slower frequency than a vibration. Less "sharp", like someone's pulling the steering left right at about half an inch at a time. Like a tank slapper on a bike. Can happen at any speed. ..? The over riding sensation is a left right left right etc rather than up and down of a wheel balance issue.

The steering sometimes feels like it was the following the camber in the road the feeling through the seat is definatly a vibration but the steering.wheel feels like a pull at liwer speed

Judt spun up the front wheel and when u look at the bottom of spring cup on tje front shock the distance between thr top of tyre and the cup flucuates as if the wheels moving up and down or that the tyres not round

You need to look at the inside edge of the rim too, to see if the rim is making the tyre move, or it's the tyre alone.

had the exact same problem on our mv6 to..only the speed it happened was between 70 and 85  :-X
all four wheels balanced, fronts to back and backs to front..turned out one of the tyres was out of shape. Problem now cured and running like a dream

Checked all 4 wheels and the inside of the rims looks good but the tyre seems to up and down especially visable on the front ones
