Title: Oh carp, have I messed up sons car.
Post by: mantahatch on 31 August 2012, 17:01:53
Had my sons Astra in for a quick service today as it is due a long run on Sunday (home to Norfolk) Did a small repair on exhaust with no problem then changed the oil and filter (genuine oil and filter) Started car with no problems and let idle for 10 minutes with no problems and then rechecked oil level, all ok.

Then set about his stereo wiring and think I have fixed the intermittant live feed to it. Then went to move the car ready for him when he gets in from work. Then a hydraulic lifter starts making quite a tapping sound, let it run for a bit but no real improvement.

Do I strip all down to locate offending lifter, or see if an italian tune up will help  :-[

OK, taken it for a gentle sedate drive  ::) It is fainter than it was but not completly gone which is bit sad. It had no noise at all before oil change  :(

Think I will have to let it go for now and have another look when he gets back.

whats the mileage? some of these thin oils are not so happy after a few miles.

Fathers cars, A4, oil change to spec= oil light on motorway after few hundred mile. change to slightiy thicker grade. A4ok.

Our 3 works Vectras are all 1.8 petrols with 350k between them...

Serviced every 10k, using gen parts and gen vx 5w30 oil, flushed with Wynns engine flush every time. Only had to use lifter treatment once on one car when a service was a couple of k late ::)

Car is Astra 2.0 16V SRi MY2000 Same engine a Vectra I think. Mileage is about 140k bit high but generally runs well enough.
Oil I used was the standard GM mineral oil 10w-40.

Beggar, just checked on can, it is the satandard oil. I have all 3 on the shelf and picked up the wrong one. No guesses for what I am off to do. Thanks for that.
