My VW 99 relay (programmable intermittant wiper timer) has always been fine.
Used the car for the 1st time in a week, went to clean the screen, and the wipers were lethargic and only swept once.
all speeds lethargic, and virtually the same, and no intermittant.
Swapped back to original, and things seem ok, but still possibly a little lethargic, need to check 2 cars together.
Anyone else had issues?

ok, so front wipers still going at about 1/2 speed.
rear is fine.
any ideas?

2nd post unclear - slow when back to factory spec? What about with wet screen?
-
yes, factory spec relay, either wash, intermittant, normal or fast...all go at the same speed, very slow.

With wet screen?

Jim found this ......
This is very common on UK Audi and VW vehicles.
It is caused by water getting into the spindle and displacing the grease on the spindle. In time, the shaft will seize up causing the slow wipe you experianced.
What I have done on many roadside repairs is to remove the wiper frame.
Remove the link arms and motor.
Remove the clip and shim on the spindle shaft with a small bladed screwdriver, heat the frame by the spindle and gently with either a hide or rubber hammer tap the spindle out (screw the nut on to protect the threads, but make sure its flush so the hammer blows dont put stress on the thread).
You might need to work the lever (use a spanner at the base of the spindle) left and right use WD40/GT85 if its well stuck.
Be careful not to snap the rubber grommet lug on the frame. This is possible as you need to rest it against a block of wood (or similar) to counter the blows.
Once out, use emery paper or similar to clean the corrosion from the spindle and the bushes on the frame.
When you have a nice polished spindle, coat it with marine grease.
Pack the space between the bushings in the frame and refit.
All new wiper frame units come with a large diffuser washer over the spindle to prevent water getting in so easily.
If you have a car over four years old and are in a wet climate it will happen to you at some point. It is always the spindle near the Ebox which has a problem, the drivers side in the UK.

yes, on a wet screen.
Cheers Marie, ill have a look at that too

Given the reliability of the units, I'd be inclined, once check full battery voltage available at unit, to just swap the unit. So many being broken, its gotta be cheap to buy...

Aye, want to get 12v to the motor, to confirm deadish, then Ill prob replace.
