Title: State Pension: When do you think you will get yours?
Post by: I_want_an_Omega on 03 September 2012, 19:49:54
There are changes afoot:

http://www.pensionsadvisoryservice.org.uk/state-pensions/state-pension-age-calculator (http://www.pensionsadvisoryservice.org.uk/state-pensions/state-pension-age-calculator)

Enter gender & DOB and it will advise you when your state pension is due.

Please note that it only takes current legislation into account - and there are changes in the pipeline that will increase these yet again for many people.

In theory when I'm 66, but who knows what will happen when the country has its Greek moment in a few years time and even if it avoids this remember real inflation is nearer RPI and the Government uses the lower fiddled CPI, so with the massive currency debasement and inflation that will occur before our Greek moment to grow our GDP and shrink the debts, it will probably be almost worthless anyway. RPI is typically 0.9% higher than CPI.

In the next 15 years ithe state pension will lose at least 20% of its purchasing power.

Motto, don't rely on any Government to give you a comfortable retirement.

take no notice of current legislation - they'll keep making it later and later.  Plus it will be means tested

with life expectancy increasing at 1 year every 10, they'll have to do something.

You will reach your State Pension Age on Thursday 8 May 2031

You will be 66 years old

That is what they think, I am not working a day past my 65th birthday. I have worked and paid tax/NI since the age of 16 and have always done a manual job.

Get these useless freeloading uni students who dont start work until there mid twentys to do the extra years. it is blatantly unfair to expect someone who started work at 16 to work as long someone who started work at 25.

Go back to the old way of paying NI for 49 years and the problem is solved. This will make students get there finger out, and may stop a bit of immigration for financial reasons.

Very sensible young man  :y

You can always ease off later in life as needs dictate - but the value of early conributions can't be underestimated  ............

68 - 38 years time for me, but I think we'll be lucky if there's still a state left then, or what we call the human race, never mind the SP! The end is nigh!  :D

Also, don't forget the whole range of cheap, discounted and free things they're 'entitled to', for being on benefits. Free school meals, council tax benefit, prescriptions, the list goes on. Shocking isn't it.

As Rods2 suggests, unless things change dramatically with the economic outlook the money isnt going to be there to pay future pensioners at current levels or current projected pensionable ages. :(
Live fast die young might be the way go. ;D

Good for you Tunnie. Pile into your company pension scheme as much as you cannot afford.

I think there are only two approaches. One live now and accept that if you ever actually make it to a retiring age as it escalates up and up (with living longer and crisis drivers). i.e. spend what you have and save nowt extra for your old age

OR contribute big time to something you can hopefully get your hands on when you are say 60 or 65 and hope you live a long retirement. (that might mean excercise, less booze, fags, beefburgers etc)

I put a lot of money into a pension funds in my 20's and 30's and saw good growth on these funds, but unfortunately a divorce and 10 years of zero or less equity growth and high UK administration fees have see it shrink faster than exposed gonads in the Arctic. Not to mention QE and the low Gilt interest rates, killing the annuity markets, compounded by the Government making pension funds keep a higher percentage of the funds in Gilts.  >:( >:( >:( >:(

Don't even get me started on Gordon McRuins £5bn per year pension tax grab, which changed our pensions from the best funded in Europe to now by far the worst.  >:( >:( >:( >:(

The lesson I've learn't NEVER let the Government and Banksters have the upper hand on the conditions in which you save money. Once it is locked in under their "Management", the rules will change only in one direction, to their advantage.  >:( >:( >:( >:(

So unfortunately the best laid plans, don't always work out like that.
