Breathe some life into a dying government? Keep the momentum going? Stop the Dither. Growth at long last ?
Third runway at Heathrow or a new four runway airport East of London?
Is it what you do rather than who does it , that matters?
-
Doubt it will make any significant difference in the grand scheme of things, apart from possibly the 3rd runway at Heathrow.
Justine Greening being moved out of transport may have changed the lights from red to amber.

Musical chairs I'm afraid. Good to see IDS giving a two fingered salute to Gideon when he tried to get him removed. Unfortunately, ditherer Dave gave him the choice of leaving, so he decided to stay and will no doubt get his revenge. ;D ;D ;D
The two important positions are still filled by duds, CaMoron and Osborne. Not a principal or common sense brain cell between them. How can we be certain? Thick Clegg tried to borrow one. ;D ;D ;D ;D Case proven.
It's the Economy, stupid. This goes straight over their collective heads as there is nobody in the Government, No. 10 or No. 11 staff with the surname of Stupid. :o :o :o :o
Good to see the anti-business secretary has kept his job, this will really help growth NOT. I hope he has still got plenty of closed signs, so he can continue to sprinkle these around, so all potential export countries are fully aware that under him the UK is firmly closed for business. He doesn't want to see any of that dirty word profit malarkey stuff in this country. :o :o :o :o
If we are very, very lucky, me might just get away with stagflation and falling living standards for the next few years. >:( >:( >:( >:(

I see boris is already spitting his dummy out over this because he wants to build his new playground in the middle of the thames estuary ::)
Talking about this 3rd runway thing, how many unwanted airfields are they in that part of the world that could be used with a little investment :-\
Imo it would make more sense to spread it around a little then try and find room in that little 20 cubed bit of airspace over london for more aircraft :-\

I think various suggestions have been made like use Birmingham just an hour from London and so on. As I see it the only solution is massive expansion of Heathrow or a new massive airport with good fast modern links into the centre of London (i.e. Boris airport once they find a way of getting rid of the explosives ship!). Britain needs to open up direct routes to new markets along with China. That means more planes over London. Did you know that France and Germany each have more Chinese visitors than the UK?

A match ? :D :D :D
Yup, this country has been loseing out to the frogs and krauts for years because of the flight problem.
In alot of cases, its quicker to nip over to schipol and transfare then sit in a uk airport.
Look at last year when the chinkys came over to europe to spread a little happiness money around.
Iirc, we got 2 billion.
The french and germans got well in excess of 9 billion >:( >:(

And back to the reshuffle
Same sh*t, different day imo ;D ;D ;D

The problem with the Thames estuary is that it is too far for everybody west of London.
For an airport to be successful, airlines have got to want to use it, as the Spanish have found to their cost. The airlines have no interest in expanding their operations in Birmingham as the main market and traffic is centred around London. Luton has plenty of spare capacity, but with its poor transport links, there is little interest in airlines using it more.
Boris island aircraft flow will cause Heathrow major problems and vice-vera where London is common airspace. There are many problems with the Thames estuary, tree huggers will have field day, sunken WWII explosives, not to mention major bird strike risks. The problem is where the third runway at Heathrow has been consistently ducked by successive Governments, Heathrow is already operating beyond safe capacity. All takeoffs and lands are at the absolute minimum wake spacing, so there are no margins of error.
My guess is that the arguments will still be going on in 10 years time and will have been solved. Anybody with an international business would be better off locating it near Dublin in the ROI or near Schiprol in the Netherlands or Munich if it is financial services related. So once they have all done that, then there will be no for a third runway or new airport capacity and where we have mass unemployment we can get them doing something useful like tree hugging.
15 years a go, I was flying regularly to Paris on business from Heathrow and it was an absolute nightmare, as fog in the Paris basin is a common Autumn / Winter / Spring problem but not a problem with Cat III landing systems apart from the aircraft spacing has to be bigger, a few minutes delay at Charles de Gaulle not a problem, missed takeoff slot at Heathrow, always meant anywhere from a 1 to 3 hour delay, so an all day 10am meeting would not often start until the afternoon. The Chunnel was a non starter where it was slower., the only practical solution with this was to go the day before have the extra cost of a hotel and 1.5 days out of the office, instead of one.
The UK transport infrastructure is a joke, one that is costing the UK billions in lost business.

+1. Smarm didnt matter too much with his old job - but I cant see that he is up for it with the new one TBH.

said ten years ago they should have used upper heyford as the next airport, good links plenty of room and all the infrastructure is still there, sits nicely between london and brum, :y

see boris's idea of a airport in the middle of thames/off grain is a good one BUT it is fundamentally flawed,as a report commission by the enviroment agency claims that come winter the preposed airport will be more fog bound than heathrow...not only that would you want to land in a plane that is surround by europes largest LNG terminal??.. :y
