Hi Guys
I just wanted to apologise to anyone awaiting a PM from me. I think I'm up to date now, but please nudge me if not.
I've had my hands full the last couple of days. Sadly my Dual Mass Flywheel failed on the labour of love that I call my MV6. Although fun at first, I was getting sick of it in manual form, especially as I do mostly long runs now, seem to constantly get stuck in oxford traffic, and am getting rubbish economy due to the ratios - I decided to convert the poor thing back to an Automatic.
After convincing SWMBO that It was worth my time of converting the car back to automatic, (and also ignoring her suggestions to part ex it for a 5 series!), I set to work yesterday.
First job was to pull the AR35 (with sonnax washer already fitted by Mr Sassanach in 2009 8) ) off the breaker, along with the Torque converter, prop, brake pedal, flex plate, and gubbins. And of course the linkage, selector arrangement, trim, blah....
Then the MV6 went up in the air. Manual box, clutch, flywheel off, autobox bolted on. Selector assembly and linkage fitted. Sumps both cleaned out. Also left the TC draining overnight - it holds around a pint!! Also flushed the ATF cooler.
The only real snag was getting the spigot bearing etc etc out of the crank, so the TC would sit in there. That made me swear and drew a little blood.. ::)
So Car is now an auto again. 8+ litres of fresh ATF, And it drives SWEET 8)
A suggestion to anyone else fitting an AR35 on their own:
1) Don't. They're damn heavy. Get some poor unsuspecting sod to help you.
2) If, like me, you're a billy no mates and must proceed ;D - I found that placing a rubber car mat on the 3 tonne trolley jack, before sitting the gearbox on it, worked beautifully. I was able to lift the box on no problems whatsoever and line it up.

Good decision! Although it was rapid in manual form, the changes were very jerky and there was a lot of noise in the cabin although that was due to missing insulation and trim. Cons outweigh the pro IMO (the only one good thing was the speed). I do agree with your missus though, buy a 5 series or a XJ350
Are you confident the autobox coming out of that breaker is not liable to break after 5 mins?

Hmmmm.. James, does that mean you have a spare complete manual conversion kit knocking about now? (Bar the DMF, I guess!)

conversion back to auto ??? :o opppss :o
someone must pass over my dead body to do that to my car ;D

Afraid not mate.
I did consider flogging it, however considered it worthless without the DMF. The gearbox was noisy too, so I just scrapped the lot.
Still have the clutch pedal, and the master cylinder, if you need them though - not removed these yet!

Would you object to us all having a sweep on the life of your new autobox? ;) ;D

I really hope that the the clutch slave cylinder feed is properly sealed :o otherwise your brake system is:
1. Open to the elements, so the brake fluid will be scrap in no time.
2. Will cover the underside of the car in brake fluid every time you accidently press the pedal, also depleting the fluid volume.
Aaron, the dmf is no biggy, they're the cheapest part of the clutch set up, £185 from VX last time I looked... :y

The cynics might suggest that an autobox will always braeak, wheras a manual box, however noisy, will last indefinitely provided there's oil in it ::)
Changing the diff to improve driveline ratio is easy enough, only 23 bolts and alot lighter the box :y

How much does it cost to recon a mig auto box these days, agree with your comment on manuals,as an x mini cab driver had a k reg carlton cdi manual. 100,000 when I aquired it 325.000 when scrapped :opart from play in linkage box was still good great car :y
