Whats the deal if you get caught with an out of date tax disc?
If "on the road" a fine plus pay any backtax due from expiry date
-
no fines.. %3 monthly interest.. Here ;D
-
Up to a £1000 fine,or five times the cost of the tax which ever is the greatest plus a fine.
-
And they can seize the vehicle ;) ;)
-
plus we dont carry tax disc holders and no one look for them ;D

Now they DO seize the vehicle.......and rightly so in my opinion..... :y :y :y

I have seen vehicles clamped by guys in the big truck, but not carted away. Done a bit of work for a dvla clamp unit and asked for a favour. Had a wreck dumped in our close with no tax. The reply to moving it was that time limits apply.

The other morning I came out to go to work (around 7am) and a DVLA van was driving all around the estate with a camara on each corner (like the Google car) taking pictures of every vehicle he could find. Even went into to doctor's surgery and filmed a car behind a bush. The tinkers are looking for cash!

No, they are looking for cars that do not have an MOT or TAX, add insurance into that and get my vote anytime..... :y :y :y
-
I know they can seize uninsured vehicles, but not sure about untaxed tbh. :-\

VED is a tax like any other tax.I would guess that most of us would refrain from paying other taxes if we could get away with it,so for me not paying tax to use a car is one I might also avoid paying if it were reasonably possible to do so. Its not though,so no point in trying.
Insurance & MOT,obviously a different matter altogether.

I haven't displayed a disc on mine for 6 months and no one has turned a blind eye, it is taxed though
-
ah yes but the offence is failure to display not failure to have ...so you have been lucky and no one as seen you not doing so :y

Last time I was out to play (ok, almost 6 years ago now) the general rule was 5 1/2 times tax due since last renewal plus a fine. Quite a good earner!!!
-
depends on whether you payed on-line or by phone.
I do believe there`s a bit of a grey area here
I bought mine on-line & didn`t get the thing until well into the first new week.
A nice lady from the help line number seemed to think I could still drive ok.

Buying on the internet should register the car imediately and therefore not get picked up by ANPR, same as I was told with a new MOT, but the the TAX the offence is actually failure to display and probably comes down to the police officers discresion if pulled.

I saw similar DVLA van driving around Wolverhampton the other week, neither of the occupants were wearing a seat belt, takes the P a little in my opinion....

The DVLA website says this (I think this may have been extended to 14 days, but I couldn't find that - only this archived post from 2008):
As a result, from the 1st of September 2008, those buying their vehicle tax online, by phone or by post will be able to legally continue to drive their vehicles for up to 5 days while they wait for their new tax disc to arrive. This will only apply where the new tax disc has been applied for before the current one expires and motorists should continue to display the expired disc on their vehicle, until the new one arrives.

I think the five day bit is right :y
-
i think it is 7 now due to how cack the post is :y
-
We'll have to start putting 'Tax applied for' notes in the windscreen like we used to.... :)
-

Got nabbed in my favourite county of Derby (nothing else to do?). Took a car for test drive which had been sorn for some time. Still some MOT. Owner was concerned about a road test due to his local knowledge of the keenness of local plod. Gave instructions of where to avoid. You guessed it, 300m into test drive, Disco spotted sporting anpr cameras on a stretch of road with no escape.. Duly tried to evade and duly blagged.
Concern was with Driving licence, insurance (trade) and mot which checked out instantly. No mention of tax at point of stop or at station to which docs produced.
