This only started on friday when i parked up so the wife could sort out some college courses. I was sat (engine off) with stereo on and charging my phone when she came back and i went to start the car. The car sounded like a machine gun when turning over but wouldnt fire. I checked for lose battery terminals but all fine, i also locked and unlocked the car incase it was an issue with the immobilizer. Any how it started and off on my way but last night on the way to work i dropped into tesco after say 10-15mins of drive for tea. When leaving it was the same as before i had to wait 20mins before the car would start. Im no mechanic but is this a crankcase sensor fault? It seems to be when the car is warm or hot.
I have a 2.6 24v v6 before people ask and thanks for any help

Check for fault codes using the "pedal trick".

Sounds like a bad battery to me. When the engine cools down its easier to turn over and the car starts again.

I doubt if it is your battery when you said it turned over for you. Are engines not harder to start when cold because the oil is thicker? At least that what I was taught during my mechanics apprenticeship god hnows how many years ago ;)
Do the paperclip/pedal trick or get a bit of help from someone near to you with a code reader or tech2. Give vx a miss or be prepared to lose your wallet ;)
On mine when it was the C/S sensor, remember that yours might not be that, all that happened was that the engine cut out and then would cut back in. Or it would just turn over and not start either hot or cold. Leave it a while and it would start again. Problem is that you cannot test the sensor, unless you know someone with a good one that will lend it to you and you try it. I re-reouted my new one so that it does not go down the back of the block and keeps it out of the way of the heat from there.
Ask around for any close by members, there might be one who can help you.

My experience with ordnance is limited but my first thought was that you were describing extremely loud, destructive, metal on metal noises (maybe starter eating ring gear or conrods poking out of the block).
On reading further it appears that the engine turned over quickly without firing :-\ classic cranksensor failure in my experience.

Also struggling with description. Thought he described the rapid clicking/tapping noise the starter sometimes make when it dont have enough juice to turn the engine over.

Its the first time ive had a 24v and it sounds totally different to a 16v jap car that ive mainly had.Its loud and rapid nothing comes up on the pedal trick the service just stays solid.

It probably is a battery/charging/wiring problem then.
If there is insufficient charge to engage the starter then it does make a noise like that.

Crank sensor was the issue with mine, may be with yours? Sounded normal when trying to start but no start at all. Didn't wait 20 min's, fault code confirmed (105,000 miles) and fine after change. May help?

Cheapest and best starting point is to charge the battery and get it tested. Once thats sorted you can then move on to other items.

I wouldn't say that sounding like a machine gun was normal ::)

I will have it in to my local garage on tuesday since they dont charge to put it on the scanner like most. It did just cut out tonight whilst at work on tick over which hasnt happened before.

And the scanner say crack sensor. Where is it located?
