I have a 2002 2.2Dti and my turbo seems a bit off. When i accelerate, the turbo kicks in and i get the extra power you would expect but then it dies for a second before returning?? Once the initial boost and loss has gone i get a smooth power boost through the rev range, it's as though the turbo has 2 phases.

Does you engine management light come on at all mate?

Good starting point but be aware if 0400 (E.G.R.) crops up then could just be leaky vacuum pipes...
-
It could be that the turbo's over boosting & the ECU recognises this & shuts the boost off a little. Do you know if the car's been re-mapped?
-
It comes on on the overun, but only if i've been coasting a few hundred yards or more. The engine does sometimes judder when i'm hovering around the 1500rpm mark where the turbo kicks in. It's as if the turbo can't make it's mind up what to do.
-
as far as i'm aware it hasn't been re-mapped

Does it only happen when you give it full throttle? Like foot to the floor.
-
yes, only on full throttle
-
The turbo's over boosting. Re-mapping usually causes this issue. How long have you had the car? The reason I ask is, if you're used to driving a petrol & you'll floor the throttle for more power. With the DTi there will be a a sweet spot that you'll get full power with & it's not flooring the throttle. Find the sweet spot :y :y

could also be a sticky wastegate? when the wastegate catches up wth the boost it vents off then returns to normal? worth cleaning it or at least checking its operating freely!

i had a dti Vectra a while back it suffered intermittent power and it was a combination of a leaking vacuum hose but this only happens if i was giving it beans and i replaced the split pipe but i believed my waste gate was also a bit grumpy so i stuck a boost gauge in and i had boost at various pressures when i had my foot down then off and then on the next press of the throttle i had more boost and power then again on removal and reapply the power was down a bit and so was the boost. i ended up getting a second hand turbo and replaced all the L joints and straight connectors on my vacuum system all was well again.

thanks for the suggestions, i shall check them out over the weekend and see if i can cure it.

Check vac hoses and clean the manifold pressure sensor.
Also seen this when the swirl flaps are sticking and need cleaning
