Title: Omega's suck
Post by: tunnie on 16 September 2012, 00:08:52
I want a 4.2 V8 Jag XJ, preferably ex-government, with the fridge in the back & all the toys including memory & adjustable rearseats,  :o electrically adjustable pedals, touch screen media centre and V8 smoothness.

Josh will you take 1 x 2.2 LPG Omega & 3.2 Elite  ::)  ;D

took a quick spin today in a xj8 4.0 supercharge jobbie. :D :) :D

Headroom a bit low, trim spot on, chassis corrosion? , chaindrive?? . still very nice sound and drive. Consumption. If you have to ask, dont bother..

Did i forget to mention the performance. ;D

I'm 6ft5, found headroom ok when I adjusted what I wanted.

One I saw did not have any bodywork corrosion, or though did not have a chance to look underneath. No sign in the engine bay either, just a nice big V8 in there  :-*

Current owner was averaging 27mpg, which is what I get from my 3.2!

(sorry should have put this in General Car Chat)

Rear suspension needs looking at, think something was amiss - probably just a tired shock, but wasn't riding bumps at speed too well

Tunnie, if you think the insurance for your Omega is bad, get an eye watering quote for the Jag ;D

Indeed. Supercharged will do high teens driven reasonably sensibly but single figures with my driving style... Better on a run though

I must say I've always had a soft spot for the XJ, had an 04 XJR once upon a time, 7 MPG was an average after resetting the trip computer and seeing how quick it was (god it did fly  :-*), I do find them cramped compared to 7 Series', S-Classes' and A8's however.

I'm not doing any, that would end the dream  ;D

I noticed a slight wobble from back when "pressing on" at speed around the by-pass, but I was giving it some.

Yeah 27 average was from non-supercharged, I always said it had to be supercharged, but if I'm honest in standard form it had plenty of go!

Not masses of room I agree, but its on of the few cars I've instantly gone "ahh this is a nice place to be" - The middle arm rest, was just in right position, the bonnet view, dials, position of the pedals. I could have sat there all day.

I even offered to drive Josh home, just to drive it some more  ;D

I hope you wasn't, else that would be disappointing. Even n/a, they should pick up its old man skirts and take off.

Get an XJR, there are so few of them they qualify for classic insurance.  It's mostly cheaper than a miggy to insure  :y

Mercedes were doing all this in 1991 ::)

Sure the Jag looks the part, but credit where it's due...

It's called the 600SEL,  has four individual nappa leather chairs with variable heating and 3 independently adjustable lumber zones on each seat, seat cushion length adjustable independently from seat rake and electric headrests. Not to mention electric memory reach/rake wheel adjustment and 3 electrically adjustable, self dipping rear view mirrors. Fridge cost 10 litres of tank capacity but was big enough for a bottle of bubbly and some canapes. Actual double glazing, the door windows are nearly a centimeter thick. The only thing that it dips out on is the touch screen infotainment, which hadn't been invented then. It does have a 10disc cd changer and bose.

All available now for about the same price as a very tidy Omega 8)

P.S. did I mention the super smooth 6 litre V12?

The earlier xj8s and r's are notorious for rear suspension bushes, only way to diagnose is have someone bounce the back end while you feel for play in the bush, from balljoints and wheel bearings are also very common on these, the later x350 xj8s and r's are known for rear suspension arm bushes and shock absorber bushes, the bushes are roughly £50 a pop and you have 3 per side including the shock absorber bushes, the performance on these is amazing considering the size of the car and they handle really well, I have driven a fair few through work and I have also noticed that the xjr's tend to be looked after much better than the regular xj8's.

Even a good BMW or Merc feel like a low rent mini-cab after a Jag. None of them are good to work on, all are expensive to keep, the German two(whatever model) feel like white goods but a Jag is a proper luxury item.

V12 XJS for me if I could afford the fuel bill.

You can get a pair for that from (I think) the US now.

But they dont need replacing as often as shocks - I hope - Just bought my XJ 4.2 to replace the old 3.0 Elite. I loved my Omega but this is in a different league. I just need a flat cap and pipe now ....

I saw a 2004 Merc rag top at Micheldever with ALL the inside edges ripped out if the front tyres. On checking, the geo was found to be spot on. Mercs of that era, no bloody thank you. Thay have massive caster and king pin inclination(or what ever it's called) so the wheel leans RIGHT over with not much lock applied. Although they addressed this on the newer ones, not sure of the cut off point.

...and why tf does Tunster need a supercharger? :-\

You can always borrow the XJ for a few days Tunnie, a short drive never really tells you much about a car. They are lovely cars to drive, but I think the only one I'd want next is the Daimler Super Eight. It's a nice version of the XJ, with better wood, leather, etc.

Marks Arteries would need to harden a bit before the Daimler became a reality Josh! ;D ;)
