Many years ago i had a tee shirt saying "Take off your lace & sit on my F*ce. Was 19/20 yrs old then & asked not to wear it to work as it may offend. @ the time i was driving a little 7.5 tonner delivering brochures to travel agents around Sussex/Surrey.
None of the girls who signed the tickets were offended!!! :P

U can help you with this one ;)

Allthough born in Yorkshire and lived here all my life, I sadly have to admit to being a failure in the one foreign language I tried at school which was french.
Proud that my Mother was Aberdonian and my Father was a Geordie and totally embarressed to admit that I couldn understand a word of either when they used to visit home.
I think the Briitsih Isles has it's own Multi Lingual Clan.
Lol, Each City has a language all of its own.
Cockney's
Brummies
Liverpudlians.
and then of course there's the Barnsley Folk.

C'mon girl 'fess up!!!!!!! :)
She is a clever girl; I can only speak a smuttering of French, a tiny bit of Maltese (born and lived on the Island for a total of 5 years), and yes reasonable academic English (require it at university!), along with good old fashioned 'street' English including all the delighfully unsavoury words that no lady should utter....usually when encountering that nut or bolt that must be undone but is in a most unaccessable location or/and won't fxxxxxx budge! ;D ;D

That's most impressive Debs.
Just out of interest, what's your native language, and did you acquire the other fluent ones through study, or exposure during periods of residence etc.?
How similar are the Nordic/ Icelandic/ Faroese tongues?
My father had a very disrupted education in the 1920's, with no exposure to foreign languages,(except Belfast :D), but simply through a lifelong passion for acquiring knowledge, speaks four languages very well, all acquired chiefly from books and radio. He is fanatical about correct pronunciation, and hates imperfect accents. I do envy the ability.
No Esperanto, I notice. Not too difficult, surely?

English and a little French computer languages however.....
Malta - they speak English don't they?
I don't remember, haven't been back since a baby - one of those huge unseen group of immigrants (yes I am classed as such) of BFPO children, so born on crown property in Malta.

Maltese has it`s basis in Arabic and was brought to the island by Moslem conquerors in the 9th. century....
The Arabs, were later driven out by Normans from Sicily, whom introduced a large number of 'romance' language words into the Maltese vocabulary.
Today Maltese is spoken by >400,000 citizens.
I`m just-aching to call them Maltesers! ;D
-
and then of course there's the Barnsley Folk.
Aye, 'ampstead wasn't good enough for you, was it?... you had to go poncing off to Barnsley, you and yer coal-mining friends.... ;D

Now there's a language i haven't touched in about 20 years :o
We were taughted it in school, i used to really hate it, i couldn't understand the reason for learning it once i found out it wasn't really used much in modern life......
Really wish i had spent more time learning French rather than dossing @ the back of the class

Yes, I likewise a Royal Navy baby with a dual Maltese birth certificate. Went back at 10 years old and lived there for almost 3 years. The Maltese do speak English well, but Maltese is still there widespread (on the Island) official language. :D
Lizzie (Maltese) Zoom ;D ;D

My birth certificate is British - it is interesting as I can never be English, definately British and if I wanted could go Maltese
