Title: Occasional non starter

My first post with a problem I've not seen an obvious answer to. The title says it all really. It's fine 99% of the time but now and again it turns over and just won't fire. No EML flashing, only code 31 when read off. No codes to read off when it does start.

Reading through stuff suggests crank sensor but I don't believe in changing things without proper evidence unless that's just the way it is with this fault.

Any other ideas gratefully received.

Mine did it once at time I checked the fuel pressure (fuel pump), ignition coil and crank sensor threesome and found that fuel pump were not working properly all the time.

Mine did exactly that, until the crank sensor was changed and now it's all good.

Check the how to guides and you'll see that it's a relatively easy fix. Just be sure to use a genuine part as the pattern parts are known to be poor.

I'd go for dodgy crank sensor as well :y

So would I, a month or so ago my MV6 started cutting out when driving. Read the codes, no crank sensor code. Replaced and all is fine now.

Crank sensors tend to misbehave for a while and then fail completely.

I now carry a (genuine) spare sensor in the boot as insurance......

Even if you don't get around to fitting it I would strongly recommend buying a sensor now to save having to wait while the dealer orders a replacement.

Thanks very much. I've read the bit about late 2.5s so I'll have a grub around underneath to make sure I get the right one or is it reliable to do it by engine no./VIN

It's so easy to check that it just makes sense to do so.

The difference between the two types is easy to spot - flat top is Bosch, if it slopes off on one side it's a Siemens.

It now refuses to start at all. New crank sensor on order from vauxhall. Couple of quick questions. Is it easier to feed the sensor down from above or the socket up from underneath as it all disappears into a black hole through the exhaust manifold.

Secondly which is the multi plug it goes into?

If you read the guide it will tell you how best to route the sensor wiring. :y
