Title: Finally started to sort out the facelift satnav
Post by: Marks DTM Calib on 14 April 2008, 10:17:55
Bought an NCDC2013 and GID about 18 months ago and have finally started to look at  fitting the thing.

Last night I modified a traffic master loom to re-route a few wires to get the CAN bus signals to the display correctly, will also add some extra wires for the CID interface before fitting.

The result is it all worked perfectly and without touching the main car loom!

So, just need to source a GPS antenna (the NCDC has an SMB Female style connector for those interested) and in it goes.

Out of curiosity .... where does this live? & does a Carin sat-nav use something similar? Reason for asking is that while I was on the phone sorting out another screen for my lad's Astra I asked about the reflective screens for the Omega. The first thing he said was that they would bugger up the signal for a sat-nav. Does this just apply to a dash mount Tom Tom/etc or would it also apply to a fixed sat-nav such as in the Omegas?

Carin sits either under tax disc, or just under dash behind/above centre vents iirc.

All reflective screens affect satnav (and cellular) signals.

Will it matter if I mount 2 receivers side by side - was going to mount mine right next to tomtom one? (by tax disc)

Just looked at the one I ordered a while back that you have ordered now, and its got around 10' cable, so plenty of scope for mounting.  Not sure it looks waterproof enough to be mounted outside the cabin  :-/

having seen it now, I think I may mount mine on rear parcel shelf (my shelf is dark grey), where it will be discrete.

Well if its not to water proof than under the rear shelf cover is an option.

How much would the signal degrade under the shelf (obviously still above metal shelf) do you think?

Not to much i would think, could always put it under the plastic grill bit at the back.

I'm just having bad memories about what a pain it was to take the shelf out and refit (blind and bose) ;D

My (then) boss and I went to brum in his car with reflective windscreen, and I took the iPaq and bluetooth GPS.  Wouldn't acquire on dash, so had to throw bluetooth unit on parcel shelf, where it did.

Now this particular receiver is show signs of being dropped too many times, but shows the reflective screens have a dramatic effect

Right, a little more progress.

Just made up a short length of loom (5 core plus screen) for the RGB interface which I will patch into the traffic master adaptor loom I have been working on.

Also, a result......just sourced a CID for 50 quid.....and even if its not been un-paired I can get this done for a small charge.  :y

So, if the aerial arrives tomorow it will be installed tomorrow evening with the GID and the CID fitted at a later date.

Should have asked me, same type gps aerial I use,  with a male connector  ;)

However, these do not work very well inside the car.......often losing signal....hence why (you may remember) mine is stuck at the bottom of drivers side A pillar. So they do appear to be reasonably waterproof  :y

So is it still connected up in car or have you found a way to return a CID to delivery mode when not properly depaired?  ;)

CID displays POI on the map which is useful for finding a petrol station etc in an unfamiliar area.

Infact displaying anything other than your fuel consumption is a plus point!  ;D

How do you get POI's ??? I don't get that option on the NCDC2013  :(

At least ... I haven't found it yet !!!

Select the menu option "Functions" in the Map menu
Select the menu option "Settings"
Select the menu option "Map Options"
Select the display options (tick all the POI you want to display)

Mine occasionally flips to German on powerup, then goes to English... probably realises the error of it's ways when it gets a GPS fix!

Thanks to both ....  :)

I guess this is limited to the POI's on the CD ?? No way of adding others like you can with TomTom ??

I find the satnav extremely poor compared to TT, it's clunky and difficult to use, does not recognise half the addresses I try to input, but the display is good and the instructions pretty concise.

It's not a patch on a TomTom, but I find it generally does the job, would be so much better if it accepted post codes  :(

POI are limited to what's on the disc, Petrol Stations, Hotels, Hospitals, Railway Stations etc.

Yup, the NCDC/GID combo works well.  NCDC/CID just works better imho.

Probably teaching you to suck eggs, but when you put CID in, when all paired and right code index, you may need to go Programming > Adjust contrast on Tech2 :)

Thanks for that .. guess the TT will remain ... I find the speedcamera warnings usefull and downloadable POI's good (especially in France). I will be putting the LPG POI's on shortly .. :)

Yeh the Speed Camera POI for various Sat Navs is a good edition. When I can be bothered I use my PDA / Bluetooth GPS with this software - http://www.cameraware.net/ Single £19.99 charge and free updates for life.

Well, it successfuly guided us to Chester and back with no fault  :y

Its nice to have a woman (who has been nick named Dorris) in the car talking to you and not complaining!

This was all installed without touching the car wiring loom!

And the aerial seems to be functioning reasonably well just behind the instrument panel.

I've nearly sorted out one in prefacelift (as a backup for when my phone goes flat - you get too used to satnav, and when you don't have it, you're knackered!), only my 1998 needs the TC button moving, and doesn't have the plug to connect the carin loom to body loom  :'( - yet my 1998 tractor does  :-/

Sadly, I didn't name her. :-[

I really was pretty impressed with it though, its the added benefits where it turns the stereo volume down when it provides the instructions etc that is really good and the pictogram seems pretty effective to.

Still, the CID should be here this week.

No, sadly not.  But I had a tractor here, which allowed my to judge where the grills go (and cut the slits for the clips).  I used some photos from ebay auction of blind to judge where to cut out the D shape holes for speaker.

It is the same as the Carlton shelf, the Carlton had rear speakers there. When you have had both it is amazing how much Omega is off a Carlton.

That I don't know - what I did notice is that the Omega shelf has blanking plates where the Carlton has speakers - I'd suggest pulling the cover up and looking
