Post by: gpenny07931 on 30 September 2012, 14:13:37
Drove my car earlier and it went fine. Jumped in ther and it refuses to start? Engine turns but just won't start? Any common things to check? Its a 2.2cd auto.

Is that easy to get to or is it a big job?

Crank sensor on 2.2 is bullet proof, cam sensors fail, but they will start even with it disconnected.

You need to get codes read, do you have a reader?

Has the key stayed intact? Check the little chip is still inside  :y

Use to have the same problem a while back, found that by re-locking and re-opening the car via the fob fixed it ??

Engine turns but just won't start?
Is it turning over faster than usual? Check timing belt integrity...
Can you hear the fuel pump priming when the ignition is first turned on?

If the immobilizer chip has been lost from the key then the e.m.l. should flash as your trying to start the car.

If you keep the starter spinning for about 5 or 6s (no longer than this!!), does it start?

Still won't start. There's a light flashing with a car and spanner on dash.

Ah, immobiliser.

Had the key apart recently? If so, look around where you had it apart, looking for a small bit of black cermaic/plastic...

Sounds like exactly like what i had on my 2.2, i went through changing sensors etc, in the end it was the ECU. (the code reader was telling me it was the ECU as well !)

Is the transponder chip secure in the key

Key seems fine. Still opens and locks car.

Transponder is not used to open or lock, only to start. As Rob pictures above, it must be right next to the ignition barrel to allow it to start. If its missing, no starty!

Good news, might be worth dab of superglue on the replacement, so it does not go walkies next time  :y

Have you looked around where you dismantled the key? Maybe inside the Hoover (other vacuum cleaners are available  ;))? A new chip will need programming via TechII  ;)

I had a good look around but can't find it. I will try to get another one for it.
