Title: headlamp bulbs....
Post by: Jay30685 on 03 October 2012, 21:48:21
Can anyone tell me what bulbs are meant to be in an omega? My headlamps are really dull. They have bulbs with 2 prongs, the wires going to bulbs are just wires with spade connectors on.

My car has previously been a taxi so a couple of cheap repairs have been done

Sounds like someone has possibly put 24volt bulbs in ::) half the voltage and half the brightness :-\

Thanks for help guys, I've got H1 bulbs fitted, 12v 80w, but are really dull. The wires look a bit burnt  has anybody had this problem? Need to get it sorted as nights are drawing in

I've taken pics but need to get Photobucket downloaded on my phone

You sure, standard fitment are 55W

Yeah that's definitely the one, 80w wouldn't make them dull though, or burn the wires

Running 80W bulbs they will

Sounds like someone may have installed overpowered (and illegal ?) bulbs to try to compensate for milky headlamp lenses, and the power they are drawing is too much for the wires ?

Yes it will, and if the wires are burnt then they will want replacing as well.

I've run 100watt bulbs and never burnt wires before, the cables are more than adequate

I can assure you they aren't, which is why yours are showing signs of distress already.

In the 2.2, I run these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Osram-Night-Breaker-Spotlight-Bulb-x2-H1-448-55W-VAUXHALL-OMEGA-94-01-/280908470885 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Osram-Night-Breaker-Spotlight-Bulb-x2-H1-448-55W-VAUXHALL-OMEGA-94-01-/280908470885)

Huge improvement over what was in there before (think they were original genuine) The light is thrown much further forward.

As already said, running high rated bulbs has not done the wiring any good

Its mainly the switch which will give up in a puff of smoke as GM wiring does not like 100w blubs.
back in the day during the war the mantas with light pods and headights used 120w lucas blubs with a relay per light plus suitable wiring looms.

Oh right, I've never really owned Vauxhall before, mainly Peugeot, Citroen and 4x4s.

I think I've found the problem, the earth terminal is very rusty. I'm going to remove the headlamps over the weekend,  replace the wires and terminals then I'll buy the above tried and tested bulbs

Thanks for all input, I will update when I've done them

Just reach up to them from underneath. 1/4 turn and the bulb pulls out.

For the past few years I have run with 100w on main beam, with standard 55w on dipped.  Just uprated the fuses for the main.  Most Vauxhalls have seperate fuses for dip and main for each headlight. (ie 4 seperate fuses for haedlights). As a general rule of thumb twice the watts equals twice the amps.

found this

The conversion of Watts to Amps at fixed voltage is governed by the equation Amps = Watts/Volts

That'll be your basic Ohm's Law at work.

Remember, the fuses are there to protect the wiring (only), and should be the weakest part of the circuit for current.

Unless you have proved the wiring and switchgear is certified for the higher current, you should never up the fuse sizes.
