Title: Torque Wrench recommendations
Post by: Radar on 04 October 2012, 14:34:52
Looks like i need a torque wrench (for refitting plenum bolts) when i attempt to change my dispack.

I saw Halfords do one for £70 but i would prefer to avoid this much expense what with a nipper on the way! Can anyone suggest cheaper alternatives? (not looking for one that tightens wheels, more so for plenum bolts / possible future cam cover changes etc..).

Yep, plenum bolts are not too critical (but they are only specified to be 8nm, IIRC, so only need to be nipped up).

Unlike cam cover bolts, nothing bad will happen if you significantly over-do it.

What torque are you wanting the wrench to go up & down to?

I have a half inch drive wrench surplus to requirements that you can have cheap.

B-Q have got tourqe wrenches for £25.00  1/4 drive. That should go low enough to torque cam covers etc.
. If you are going higher then get a 3/8 one which I thing was £27.00.
. For quality I use britool but they not cheap.

Sorry that was a quick reply while I was on.
Plenum bolts I don't think i've ever torqued. So save your penny's for now.

However cam covers are worth making sure. I have one here you can borrow if needed. It's a bit old though. Adjuster knob fell off last time i used it, after some ham fisted admin turned the adjuster the wrong way. Sigh... ;D

IMO if buying torque wrenches it's worth considering the range you'll need for future applications too, as potentially, you might need three to cover the range needed for the omega. But if choosing wisely, it might be possible to keep it to only two...?

This one does 60nm to 300nm
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_178621_langId_-1_categoryId_165469

Although its only rated to 300nm it will give enough range to do wheel barings at 310. Which I think is the most range you'll need?

So point is, if your happy with the Halfords one in the link, you'll only need a torque wrench for cam cover bolts that covers 8nm up to 60nm to have almost all angles covered with two wrenches.

...so should save a few penny's, IF i bigger wrench is needed later on, if you see what I mean.

Although, the one in the link, has a push through drive, as a reversible option, as opposed to a lever and two way ratchet of the more expensive ones. The push through drive can be a bit annoying tbh. But in theory a torque wrench only needs to do up, as opposed to undo as well, but it's a handy option to have a reversible ratchet. You pays ya' money.... ;)

No complaints here :y about the worst thing you might need it for is the front hubs :y I have an older much more abused one which I keep in the car along with a breaker bar for wheel changing purposes and nowt else...

Radar - plenum, nip up as other says. Not *that* critical. But don't go mental.

If you do need to buy one in the future, find a local member with a Halfords Trade card, discounts on torque wrenches is quite good.

Guys, thankyou to all for your advice :y and to Chris and Pete for your kind offers :y The information is useful to keep in mind.

Seeing as my immediate need was for the plenum and nothing else yet planned / necessary i will hold fire until such time dictates.

P.S. More for the nappy budget! Oh no :P

I would say that you do need a torque wrench (or more than 1) at some point. Its just not critical on the plenum. IIRC, plenum is supposed to be 8Nm, so just the tiniest nip.

Now, if it were something more critical (or easily overtightened like cam covers), defo use torque wrench.
