Nipper been complaining about the xbox not opening the cd draw and not reading the disc. Dug out an unused chipped unit with the intention of swiping the disc drive.
Swapped over .
The unit now opens and closes but has a strange message on the screen saying something like "connect to console"
Are the items coded together?
And where is the "chip" fitted . In the board or elsewhere or is it a software bodge that they receive?

The DVD drive is coded to the motherboard

As above, can't swap DVD drives from 1 to another, but if you know how and there are some guides on the net it can be reprogrammed

Basically, you can'y swap DVD drives. Any faking of the pairing can normally be detected by MS, and will result in a Live ban (not straight away - MS do the bans in waves, usually once or twice a year)
