Quick question My MOT is due in Jan but I want it done sooner mainly to get it away from Christmas time and tax and insurance all due at the same time
Can I have the Mot at any time I want and basically just start again as it were

Yes. :y

If presented earlier than a month before its due, you will get a 12 month ticket from the date of test. ie, if you MOT'd it today, the MOT would run out 5th Oct 2013

2 issues here I l believe:
1. If the MOT is done no more than 1 month away from expiry of the old one then the new one can be dated for expiry 12 months from the old certificate. What date in Jan therefore dictates how far away from Christmas
2. If you have MOT done and it fails I forget whether the car is permitted at all despite a current certificate. I would need to check this - I recall some on here say old cert is valid despite the fail prior to expiry of old cert.

I believe it depends on the seriousness of the fail... ...in which case, it shouldn't be on the road anyway
