Title: Windscreen Aperture
Post by: MarkG on 06 October 2012, 15:17:16
My windscreen developed a crack a week or two ago. It started from the screen edge in front of the driver's view. So a few days later AutoGlass visited and it turned out the fitter also owned an Omega and was quite a fan of these cars. But that's not the reason for this post. He was unable to fit a new windscreen because my windscreen aperture was going rusty and it is this rust that caused the screen to crack. There were 2 spots I already knew about where paint was bubbling on the roof leading edge. So I took it to the local bodyshop for what turned out to be pretty extensive repairs and a roof re-spray. Windscreen is fitted now and all is as good as new. So next time you need a new windscreen, check your aperture.

Not uncommon at all in these cars.  The aperture along the bottom of the screen is prone to rust due to water ingress under the scuttle.  Often rust along the roof line and down the A-pillars is caused when a windscreen is changed, if the fitter damages the paint with his cutting tools, leaving unprotected metal.

It's good the hear that the Autoglass fitter pointed out the rust and refused to fit the screen.  Some dodgy outfits would have fitted the screen and took your money, only for the rust to cause the new screen to crack again at a later date.  :y

I had a few rust scabs when they came to replace mine and he pointed out that he should not fit it unless the rust was treated , ready to pack away his stuff i said if he took the screen out i would deal with the rust so treated it there and then and screen fitted  :y
