I have a rough running 2.6 and I get the idea its a plug or coil pack problem, if its plugged into a code reader will it tell me if a coil pack has a problem?
Its misfired about 3 times now over a year period but normally as soon as I shut the engine off and restart the fault clears, but today its just going nowhere, so does anyone know how much new coil packs are if needed?

Yeah I did that, I got 0300 0301 0302 0304 0306, so just about everything is misfiring, lol, but its not running bad enough to be running on just 2 pots
-
Have you taken the coil packs out, checked the wells for oil/water?
-
I have checked the easy side, that is dry, dont fancy doing the other side, I can get it plugged into a code reader as my dad and nephew both work in garages, just wondering if that would show if the coil packs are at fault before I spend lots, no doubt I'll need to order the parts as I cant see VX having them in stock
-
Pedal trick will tell you all you need to know :)
-
All I can see is 4 pots are misfing, but I'm pretty sure only 1 is, it drives ok, just a bit lumpy at 2k

You need to take other coil pack out and take a look, inspect both for any signs of damage/burn marks.

I'll get my nephew to do the other side, my hands are too big to get in little places, and my days of playing with cars are long gone, lol, I was going to change all the plugs last year but only did the 3 on the drivers side in the end, I did try to do all but gave up, I still have 3 new plugs so I'll get them changed, but is it worth getting it code read? Or wont a faulty coil pack show up? I'm pretty sure they wont charge me so I guess the only thing I have to lose is time if it shows nothing but a misfire

You've read the codes you need to, with the pedal trick :)
No need for a code reader ;)
-
But I have no idea if its the plugs or coil, just that its misfiring, which I could tell without looking at the codes, lol, guess the only way to find out is to change the plugs first

and to do this you will need to remove coil packs, so whilst coil packs are removed check condition of them for damage etc, as already stated, also check condition of spark plugs. ;)

What's the service history on plugs and coil pacs? What's the mileage?
-
To get 2/4/6 CP out:
Remove oil filler, and put yellow cap directly on cam cover.
Remove 2 torx bolts holding cabletray in place.
Unclip the top of the cable tray from the bottom (awkward clips, try to to break them, they may be brittle).
Remove lower part of cable tray - these allows enough slack on wiring to move out of way a bit.
Unplug CP.
Remove 2 bolts holding CP to head.
Screw these 2 bolts about 5 turns in to the brass inserts in CP, and pull on these bolts to lift CP.
Wiggle it out of the way, whilst keeping wiring out of the way.
-
About 10 mins to remove, most of that is unclipping top of cabletray.
-
I don't know how long the plugs have been in on the 2/4/6 bank, could be the original plugs, its gone 88k miles, I've got both coil packs on order and will be changing the plugs and coil packs tomorrow, I hope this fixes it or I'll have no idea what to do next, lol
-
Just an update on my car, plug 4 is totally dead and was loose, soot all over the coil pack, good news is the wells are all dry, all 4 prongs and the bit in the middle of the plug are gone, never seen a plug this bad
-
Hopefully got blown out the exhaust port. :-X
-
Yeah lets hope so, lol
-
I think it was time I changed this plug!

:o :o ::) :o :o yes its best to change that ;D :y
-
If the car's done 88K that shows how sensible GM's 80K service interval for the plugs is. ;D
I guess, if it's been rattling loose in the head, shock might have done some of the damage, but still.. They clearly work loose in 80K regardless of their condition.
-
I'm not sure if they were the original plugs or not, to be honest the other 5 look hardly used, I just hope all the missing bits burnt off rather than fell in the cylinder, its all back together now with new plugs and coil packs and seems fine, I hope it stays that way
-
If you don't mind me asking, how much did you end up paying for the coil packs?
-
£75 each, made by Bosch
-
Cheers pal. Just in case I need to go down that route :y
-
Is there anyway of finding out which cylinder is not firing on a MFL as I have just noticed slight missfire too.....plugs 10k..leads 2nd hand replaced 10k ago...dispack Bosch replaced around 30k.
Only just started but definite misfire..sorry to hijack post but OP seems to have answer and topic related.

Have a look at this

Thanks for link but paperclip test won,t provide an ignition fault as it won,t be a stored code.
Just curious if there was a simple means of establishing which cylinder is misfiring as to get at most of the plugs you need to dismantle enough to stop the engine from being able to run.
