Title: Windscreen Trim and Leaks
Post by: John-R on 10 October 2012, 16:41:28
I want to prevent my 2,4,6 coil pack from disintegrating from the usual water drips from the scuttle.
I notice the rubber trim at the bottom of the windscreen has come away which I believe may not help the problem, although the screen is still solidly bonded to the frame.
Can I re-bed the trim and if so, what's the best stuff for the job ?

Thanks

Its not the trim on the widscreen thats the problem, its the plastic scuttle panel normally where the 2 parts meet thats the point of leaking.

If you totally remove both wiper arms then the entire scuttle panel you will see a curved section of the metal firewall that is almost directly above # 6 plug.It is this curved section that is where the plastic scuttle sits against and the stupid bit of foam padding that GG decided to fit there which then gets soaked and drips water onto the cam cover and down into the plug area. >:(

Best advise is to remove all the foam wadding from the curved bit of the larger section of scuttle and thoroughly clean the curved bit of the firewall then apply a nice thick bead of ideally silkaflex or alternatively silicone joint sealer then squash the scuttle back into place in effect sticking it to the firewall. This should then stop the water that runs down the screen from going anywhere other than straight to the drain just above the pollen filter.Next area requiring sealant is the 2 holes that the wiper spindles go through.I found it better to apply another thick bead of sealant on the rubber/felt circular washers that sit on the wiper spindles and in effect stick them to the underside of the scuttle, then as an added measure apply another bead all around the other side when the scuttle is in place sealing the hole.

With good luck that should cure the water leaking onto the engine from the windscreen. Also worth making sure both both drainage channles are clear whilst scuttle is removed and once it is stuck down...DON,T EVER BE TEMPTED TO REMOVE THE SCUTTLE AGAIN. ;D..once its watertight leave it well alone  :y
