Title: Bonnet lock issue /oil filler cap
Post by: pscocoa on 12 October 2012, 21:02:46
3 weeks ago checked oil and topped up a little.

During this week my son wanted to borrow Omega for 600 mile journey but went to check oil again but could not open bonnet. It was not lever in cabin so assumed it was at bonnet lock end. Anyway no time to dig further so he took it for his trip and of course no oil check. No problems during his trip - so I dropped it in at dealer for MOT today as which is due anyway and pointed out bonnet problem.

2 of the guys got bonnet open by pushing it down but when doing MOT reported that oil filler cap was missing. The cap was stuck to the underside of the front of the bonnet - no oil has leaked i.e. no mess down engine and oil level is at max. Car did 600 miles in 2 days mostly motorway. It was the cap being stuck that had caused the problem with the bonnet lever mechanism and everything back to normal so it must have been in that position before the long journey.

Can it be correct that a missing oil filler cap could have no consequences such as leakage and smoke?

It failed the MOT on 2 rear tyres and a fog light switch which will get sorted next day or so.

You might find an oily patch above the oil filler on the bonnet insulation :-\ your car obviously doesn't breathe heavily if no evidence :y Suprised there wasn't a smell of fumes though :-\
