Title: Updated gearbox software
Post by: TheBoy on 29 October 2006, 14:26:44
Marks_DTM suggested at Santa Pod that I should try newer auto gearbox software on my 98 MV6, as apparently the shift pattern was improved from around 2000 onwards....

I should say that I've not had a problem with the box or its shift patterns (cranksensor failures aside), and it didn't hang onto low gears like the earlier boxes when cold.

I've updated it from V5 to V9

After I use it tomorrow, I'll post back what I think.

With a 2001 model, you probably already have it ;)

Does your cheapo tech2 lead reveal software version of autobox (cant remember)?

I already have it on my 99 Elite. Nah nah na nah!!  ;) (Courtesy of Ellesmere Port) I never had a problem with the original software but the newer version is smoother.

Do you know what version they put on (or when they did it)?

It didn't connect to the autobox, so I don't know which version I have...  :(

Took it to work today, and the new software is much better :D

Bearing in mind, the only changes since I last drove in Friday are that I've changed the wipers, taken off cruise stalk and put non cruise on, and done the gearbox software. ie nothing mechanical.

The gear changes are much smoother, esp normal changes. When in full kickdown, the changes have much less of a surge on them.

Additionally, the box seems much more solid, as if less slip through torque converter.

Boy, was I having some serious fun around the roundabouts in Milton Keynes this morning, getting the TC light flickering coming off the roundabouts. It was dry, and my SP9000 235/45ZR17 never usually allow this.

It's strange that the software can make the box feel mechanically more solid.

:D

It was a year or two back now so can't really remember but version 9 does seem to ring a bell.

Are your experiences with the software similar to mine above?

Yeah, swap out the soft-ware behind the wheel!   ;D

Yes, you car does need the gear changer swapped. For me.

Kinda like role reversal with me and you Tunnie - you're young but sensible, I'm an old git but drive like a youngster....  ;D

That has yet to be determined.  Yours is quite a late model prefacelift, so may well have later software on...

Yes, Tech2 required, and flashable g/box ecu (ie 1998 MY onwards).

The gearchange is smoother and faster. There also appears to be less slip - its easier to get the TC light flashing in dry coming off the Milton Keynes roundabouts.  So, although I haven't timed it, I would guess there is a small improvement in acceleration.

If I'm honest, I struggle to understand how the software alone can make the amount of difference that I have experienced.

I had no problems with my autobox before, so never really bothered. Its only I was bored Sunday morning that I did it. Bloomin' glad I did now... :D
