Title: Omega now off the road - don't know what to do with her
Post by: PAULCDX on 18 October 2012, 10:08:16
Hi all,

I've taken the difficult decision to take my car off the road and cancel the insurance / tax. :-[

Not sure whether to offer it for sale on ebay for spares or if anybody on here wants her as a breaker for spares please let me know.  :-\

My original for sale ad in the trading section has a link to the car with pictures and description if anybody is interested.

Look forward to some suggestions or thoughts.  ;)

Thanks as always

Paul  :y

Times are hard and you have to do whats best , getting near to the point of taking mine off the road if things dont change . If it was me i would keep the car till its affordable to be put back on the road , regretted selling my last two omegas and now it wont be worth much but more to me knowing whats been done to the car . Nothing worse than buying another omega or any car then finding it needs loads spending on it again  :y

up to a point it is better the devil you know. It can be difficult to decide on the cost effectiveness of it all. Just decided to keep mine another year but it does seem daft that you almost give away your Omega and then replace with what????

A youngster working for me has just taken a 4 + 24 month lease on a new VW UP at £100 a month - 66mpg and £25 pa tax. Would you be happy with cheap motoring but no toys and little passenger comfort (driver comfort is pretty good).

It's a sad day when you have to make the decision to take the Mig off the road.

I know a lot of people are having to face up to the fact that although they are lovely, big, comfy modes of transport, the cost of petrol is weighing heavy on many pockets.

So do you sell at a ridiculously low price or keep it on the drive and use it occassionally?
This then begs the question of tax at £240pa plus insurance at £400pa and you begin to wonder if it really is worth keeping it.

Many on here will have spent a lot of time and effort and money on maintaining their Migs and can't face giving that up.

Personally I made a choice a few months back. Mig is taxed and insured 'til June 2013, but only really goes out at the weekend or very long trips. I fill the tank when I get paid and that has to last. For the rest of the time we use Mrs R's Piglet 107 (50+mpg / £20pa RFL) which is really quite OK on our daily use.

Everyone has to make choices and until someone devises a way of letting me run my Mig on a cheaper fuel, she'll have to stay on the path until the weekend comes round again.

Sad days.

This is the reason I bought a DTI, I didn't want to lose the comfort, handling, size and toys that an Omega offers but I couldn't really afford the fuel bills of the 3.2 as a daily car.

My problem was, like many on here, I had put too much money, time and effort into my 3.2 to sell it for peanuts. So after a trial run with a DTI estate (now run by Mrs VXL V6) I finally found another Elite Saloon but with a 2.2 Diesel in it.  :)

Starting to face up to the same decision.

MOT advisory on front pads, possibly new discs at 46000 miles :-\,  a couple of little niggles, replacement coolant bottle and rear door loom, Say £200 :-\. Then all good.

Or do I put the same money into a 1997 1.6 Astra LS in order to save some money on petrol?

The question is how much money would I save on an annual mileage of 4000 per year, mainly round town, and would this justify the loss of the comfort of the Mig?

Obviously fix the Omega ::) you could spend the money buying the Astra, then what happens when the cambelt that had allegedly been changed snaps :-\ or the exhaust falls off etcetc...

If you can afford a new(er) car and fancy a change, and truthfully don't have a need for a proper car, then good luck with the decision :y

But if you cannot honestly make your mind up, then stick with what you know :y

I got rid of my first Mig a few years ago. I then spent two years pining for it, including being banned from watching Road Wars, until I bit the bullet and got my latest one.
