Title: Wiper blades
Post by: tport on 22 October 2012, 20:20:37
Driving back on the A1 through the rain yesterday and my offside wiper was leaving streaks, just at the level of my eyeline.  Time for new blades then.  Are the dealer blades any good and are they priced reasonably on TC?

About £15 by the time VAT goes on.

I would say they're probably best, though opinions vary  :-X
Not sure of current price though.

I replaced mine last week with the Valeo flat blade type. They seem OK so far but only time will tell. They were about £22 from Halfords. I could have got TC replacements but I was on holiday so I just opted for these to give them a go.

IMHO, these lack in 2 areas - contact area near the tax disc (normal wipers miss slightly, but not as bad), and less ability to remove suicide flies and bugs, compared to a standard wiper.

On the upside, they stay quieter for longer, and remove water well when its raining.

(Based on the Bosch and the Goodyear ones I've used at various times on my Omegas, not used Valeo)

Having had the valeo's, some other crap make of flat blade, Bosch Aero Blade twins, and genuine.

I'd say the only two worth considering are

Bosch twins, about £25 last I looked last just over two years
Genuine, price as said, last about 9 months to a year.

Ya pays ya money... :)

The others, squeaked, lifted at speed and thumped randomly when changing direction...seemed generally to be a pita tbh. Not all flat blades are the same. Ooooh no!

The cheapy flat ones I bought on Ebay were about £6 for all three delivered. I tend to replace wiper blades every couple of years as a matter of course so am not too bothered about getting several years out of them. But at that price you'd still be quids in. They work better and are quieter than ordinary ones too.

Ps, some flat blades sit higher, so cause wind noise, and due to the deeper blade design they can foul on the under side of the wiper spring and cause a wobble

They also seem sensitive to play in the clamping/fitting mechanism. Although designs vary.

Blimey, they are supposed to be annual. Thus by my standard regime, mine are binned (or given to Tunnie ;D) after 6 months :o

I would say the Goodyear are probably as good as the Bosch ones I tried 2 or 3 years ago. Not sure what kind of Bosch they where though.

Don't think they where twins then, going by description.

Agreed, the last two inches hangs off the screen in park position.  :y The lack of aero-foil thingy on drivers side did make me wonder about the pressure on the screen issue.  :-\

Change them annually! Blimey, this is about only the third set I've bought for it in nearly ten years.  ;D ;D No wonder it's not my specialist field.  ;D I normally change them when they are perished.  ::) ::)

Agree with you totally, Tax disc area not quite cleared, but no other trouble. Mine were cheapo ebay ones, been on 18 months now, still working fine. Not bad for about a fiver a pair.  :y

Replaced mine with ones from Tesco ,about £7.00 if I remember, six months in and still going great clean and quiet!
At that price a couple of sets a year wouldn't really matter, and they are "flat".

Even I will admit the ones you gave me are shagged. Need to pop to halfrauds and pick some up, with winter here need good ones. Halfrauds trade they were around 4 quid each I think

Just marginally less shagged than the ones you were using IIRC ;D

I do use the aero style ones on TBE, as the rain sensing wipers are a bit keen, and aero are quieter on virtually dry screens.

:y Got my new ones Bosch ones free from Autoglass when I had a chip repaired a few days ago.
The offer runs out this month. ;)
The old ones will be left on until they pack in. I got a pair from Tesco (flat ones) well over a year ago for a tenner all told and they are still wiping streak free and are almost silent.

Bought some of these last week and their great and even sorted that screen smearing issue I had after using some of this stuff http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/200887358168?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
The only issue with the Bosch aero twin is as mentioned before the over hang on the passenger wiper which isn't a problem just visually annoying to look at  ;D

Hmmm has anyone tried these ??? Their German apparently. Can't say I've heard of that brand before. A reasonable price if good.

I've been using these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/320873624417?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

The last lot lasted from 11/2011 through to about January this year before they were noisy - still cleared water just fine, but had obviously gone a bit hard. Stuck a new set on and they're silent again..
