Got a bit of a problem here...and swmbo is getting a bit paranoid. ;D
We keep finding dead, or nearly dead wasps around the house. I can't see a nest anywhere, and I can't hear any buzzing.
However, the mrs has been stung twice now whilst in bed, and then keeps finding others.
Do they all die off. Can't recall having seen any flying around the house when the weather was better. So why are we getting them :(

A woman across the street has the same problem.
Normally, they tend to go a bit mad when winter aproaches and the cold weather comes then they die off.
She has a wasps nest in the eaves of her roof / loft area.
Have a look outside in the corners (small normally whiteish in colour) nest.
Don't touch the thing because they will come and get you.
You can buy a spray foam that you coat the nest with that kills them off but my advise is to get some other muppet to do it for you ;)

i was told by our pest control guys they do keep reusing a nest..that's how a nest become so big as they build on it year after year
tony are these's wasps or solitary honey bee's????...as the later are protected unless they are in close proximity of a dwelling as these will swarm without reason....get yourself a pest control guy in they will get rid first time as they know where to look and tbh it is £ 40 but a lot less if the buggers swarm

The world expert on European wasps was strolling past a record shop. A sign caught his eye: "New Album - Wasps of the World!” The man asked to hear the album and was given headphones. Three minutes later, he announced, "I am the world expert on European wasps and the sounds that they make and yet I recognize none of those." The clerk offered to play another track. And another. And another. Still, the expert did not hear sounds he recognized. Suddenly, the clerk realized his mistake. "I'm really sorry," he said. "I was playing you the bee side."

maybe. I have just got rid of three barrow loads of lovely grapes (don't tell Guffer for gawds sake) There must have been a couple of hundred wasps (just arrived from the English Costas) gorging themselves on fermenting juices and then falling on the ground in a stupor.
They hibernate - beds are a great place. Nice and warm and safe........ ;D ;D ;D

One chose one of my t-shirts one year as it was hanging in the spare room to dry.. it got a surprise when I put the t-shirt on, but not as big a surprise as I got when it stung me two or three times down my back, fell into my jeans and got me another three or four times between the buttocks..
Oh, the dance I did around the kitchen, tearing off clothes...

Christ that's huge, I thought they were little things. :-\
-
that is huge i wonder how many of the little buggers that holds..... :y
-
Friend of mine had the exterminator in to get rid of a 'huge' one in his roof.. they said it was big, but not the biggest they'd seen as that was some 3m diameter :o
I'm told there's one in my roof.. really should get up there and send someone up there to remove it!

CORRECT :y :y

>:( They do get rarer to find but from my experience they still sting you if they get the chance! They build a nest somewhere snug and probably wait the cold weather out. Pity that it don't wipe them out though........and the hoss flies (cleggs) too. ::)
-
Do they always build in the open, like your loft picture, or will they build in the cavity. They should not be able to, as I have cavity wall insulation ;)
I'll have to get our big torch out and explore the nooks and crannies in the loft (from a distance) ;D
-
We had a nest a few years back in the cavity between our bedroom ceiling and the eaves, so yes, they do seem to take to confined spaces too. Spent a few weeks wondering what the buzzing noise was, then got a chap in to nuke them. No problems since.
I wonder if you've got such a nest and there is a route by which they can get indoors? Perhaps they've seeking the warmth now that it's getting too cold for them to survive outside? Probably worth finding it and dealing with it now. I guess it'll get repopulated in the summer if you don't.

We seen thousands of wasps entering next doors roof over the summer last year but none this year ... must remember to let him know about the 10 inch gap in his tiles ::)
